Please can someone suggest some decent dog clippers that are up to the job of a Poodle x. His dog groomer has got terminal cancer and is finding grooming any sort of dog very hard. I struggled hard to find her as no one around here would take him on as they seem to think he'll be too much work. DG said that he should be easy to do myself and showed me how she does him to suit. I can't leave him au naturel as last year he suffered heat stroke from running about in quite low heats with his full coat on. Plus it is easier to groom and prevent matts! Anyway so I was looking at the Wahl ones, but any suggestions are much appreciated.

I have been hacking him with scissors but it looks awful.

Depends really on what you want..a total clip off and I swear by my Lister Stablemate horse clippers..being very careful on fiddly and tender bits.If you want more fancy a hairdo ..then Oster Gold is my other choice. With them you need different blades for different bits..i.e. if you want "poodle" look a fifteen blade for face and feet and tricky bits like between the toes and underneath the foot. Personally I would go for a clip off for the summer anyway.

Check out the Moser Switchblades. They're not QUITE pro standard, but for one dog every so often, they should be the business.

Find out from your groomer (if you haven't already) what blade she uses. If you're looking for short, probably a 7F...leaves about 3mm. 5F is a little longer so about 6mm. Any longer than that you'll really need to bath and dry it really well before you can expect a half decent finish. If you're a real dab hand at bathing and brushing and can dry it reasonably well with a blow dryer, you could go mad with getting a 30 blade and some stainless steel comb attachments, but would require you to keep on top of it more regularly (ie instead of 4x a year, more like 4-6 weeks).

I'm not sure which wahl ones you're looking at, but I don't know of any wahl clippers that are really up to full body work...most of the ones I've seen are adjustable blades with cheapo plastic comb attachments that unless you're meticulous with the bathing, brushing and drying process, absolutley zero knots in the coat, you'll pop the combs off and leave big holes.

Thanks for your replies, I was looking at the basic Wahl ones but I know that his coat is not normal so will have a look at the Moser ones. I've borrowed Wahl ones before and got no where with the comb bits as it is near impossible for his coat to be tangle free. He's called Rasta dog at the yard as he loves his dreds, I groom him every day but it is an on going battle the longer his coat gets. He currently looks like a foot stool when he is brushed out!

I use The Wahl Pro Series Rechargeable Trimmer for our Shih Tzu. I do him regulary (every 6 weeks) to keep on top of it, if i leave him go longer it can be a real job to get his coat back without just hacking it off! He's got quite a thick coat too so does take some getting through.

The clippers are good, i use a comb on them too so that i don't skin the poor dog, i do take his coat fairly short though (use comb No.2 or 3 on top and no comb for underneath). It takes me about an hour to do him all with them. They do get a little warm in that time so i do his main body with the clippers and then trim his paws with scissors to let them cool down and then do his legs and underneath with the clippers again. You can use them pluged in to the mains or off their battery, I've used them for about half an hour off their battery and they dont loose any power. They are easy to use, and quite well balanced in your hand, not heavy. Also used them to trim the horse!

Have had the clippers now for nearly a year so going quite well i think. I would defo look at Wahl ones, really quite pleased with ours :)

I bought some wahl ones a few years ago for my terriers, but ended up using the horse clippers, until I decided to go back to the dog groomers. The horse clippers were the best just a bit heavy.
