dog collars - law?

I know what a lurcher is and most of them are as much a pet as any other dog....can anybody actually point to some proof that anyone has ever been fined, not a fixed penalty but a fine for having a dog without a collar ? That would help !

Personally I would not put microchipped on the dog tag. My vet advised me to not include this, having seen dogs come in where thieves had tried to find and dig out the chip. All loose dogs are automatically scanned anyway. I do however have my vets number on the tag as well.

It may be different now but some years ago I was horrified to learn that strays were PTS without being scanned.

lots of places still do not scan as routine, hopefully with microchipping becoming a legal requirement places will be more thorough when they get a new animal registered or a stray bought in.

most vets still do not scan new animals that are registered with them so if they are stolen and sold on they are often not reunited with previous owners

As a thought, does a check chain count as a collar? I/D tags will easily attach to a ring.

Alec.

i would have thought leaving a dog with a check collar on is much more dangerous than a leather one. if the ring got caught on a branch they could be strangled very easily and it wouldnt break . mine both wear thin leather collars and tags with phone numbers but the collars are very loose . they are not used for the lead as i use a slip lead instead.

my dogs never wear collars when off lead due to an accident i witnessed yrs ago,

however if your dogs wear a collar and disk and you wish to be within the law then your surname and mobile phone number does not meet the legal requirements, it has to have your name and full address to be legal

I have never had a problem with just my surname and Mobile number. I will not put my name and address for personal reasons , as I will also not put the dogs name on a tag either. There are too many dogs being stolen these days that the more personal information you put on a tag the more likely things will happen.

All my dogs work so in fact very rarely wea a collar. I too have seen some nasty accidents with a dog wearing the wrong type of collar.

My dog only ever wears a collar to go to the groomers/vets. Other than that she never wears one. I don't think its a well policed law. In fact I don't think they care all that much. I regularly ride along the roads with my dog off lead walking next to me. Police have often driven past and done nothing more than smile.....

My working dogs don't wear collars at all. When they are not working I do exercise them in public places like the beach, even though I do know that officially they should have a collar on :o

I have two non-working dogs, one who doesn't wear a collar now because the puppy keeps pulling it off and she never leaves the farm.

The Rottweiler puppy wears a collar with a tag, but I only put my surname and telephone number on it, they are all microchipped.

Saying that I think it is right that it is the law that they should wear identification, and it will be completely my fault if I ever get caught.

Its the law and therefore should be adhered to. Same as you are supposed to change your horses' passport into your name within 30 days of ownership.

You break the law and then serves you right if you get fined for it.

I find it very irresponsible not to have collars and tags on your dogs. Mine wear collars all the time except my JR as she gets crated at night, but wears one out. My Greyhound and Lurcher have two collars, a house collar with a tag on and a 2inch collar which gets put on for walks, the others just have regular ones on. On my tags it has I am chipped, insured and neutered on one side, on the other is my surname, the first line of my address, postcode, home number and mobile.

I have never had any problems with my dogs wearing collars in or out of the home. I would never forgive myself if one of my dogs got lost without a collar and tag on, its for peace of mind.

In the forest the dog wardens are very hot on dogs not wearing collars/tags, you get a warning then if your found again your given a fine. A lady got a £600 fine only last week, I know because she was talking to another dog walker saying how silly it was.
