Hello everyone,

Basically my Collie seems to be constantly scratching, round her neck, her armpit sort of area, and on her back.

She is all flea'd up (or de flea'd rather!) my other dog doesn't scratch at all, and having closely inspected her skin (more than once!) I can't see anything ab normal. All looks a normal colour, no sore bits and she doesn't have any reaction when I scratch the areas (as though they're not really itchy IYKWIM).

But it's getting a bit irritating now! And if I have guests over it looks as though I have a walking flea fest wandering round the lounge!

Any ideas what it could be? I wandered whether to wash her in some tea tree in case she has a bit of an irritation?

What flea treatment have you used?
What do you feed?
Any changes? Heating? washpowder?.

I wouldn't use tea tree -some dogs are allergic to it (so am I) but a bath & extra rinse with a mild shampoo my help.

My collie gets this every season change. I have four dogs and he is the only one affected. I tried all sorts until my vet was out to Fly for vacs and I mentioned it to him. He told me to use piriton one a day. I started that afternoon and within an hour of the first one, he stopped scratching. He had one a day for a week and then I stopped. Within 2 days he was scratching again, so I put him back on them. I now start then when he starts to scratch and stop every couple of weeks to check. When I stop and he doesn't start to itch again, I know that's it for that season change. It's easy, cheap and the only thing that works on him. xx

Absolutely nothing has changed, although the only thing that has happened is I moved yards? And it seemed to start around the same time as that? But don't know if I may just be imagining that. Otherwise absolutely no changes I use frontline flea treatment?

I know she isn't allergic to tea tree as I have a special shampoo that I've been using on her since I got her 2 years ago. She gets bathed fairly often as gets very muddy very often! But normally only a rinse so might try shampooing.

That's really interesting. Mine is a Collie too, I will give this a go. Thank you!

Well, as the vet said to me, antihistamines work 3 times more effectively on dogs apparently and also, they cannot do any harm so it's worth a try and it worked for me. He did say it can cause some dogs to be a bit pooey and if the happened up to me if I stopped or continued, but no problems with Stig and it worked just as well with my parents dog too.

I am no vet, nor do I know all of the facts, but I know it worked for me with no side effects.

I use frontline flea treatment

This stuff is as useless as a nun in a punch-up IME. You could try asking for vet for either Stronghold or Advocate (think that's the right name!).

The other thing that just MIGHT be going on is thyroid problems with your doggie, as I believe that can cause itching. Might be worth checking........???

My collie suffers from flea allergy dermatitis if not protected. Frontline is useless, changed to advocate and he is fine now.

if there are foxes on the new yard it may be early signs of mange, I would use advocate as it covers fleas and mange (amongst other things) frontline is not always effective for fleas and does not treat mange at all
