dog crates help please

just want some advice about dog crates cayla very kindly gave me her advice on crate training which i am following and i know it is early days but my pup really doesnt like the crate she will not entertain it dont know if it has been used before as a punishment i got her from dogs trust she is nearly 5 months do i persevere or give up dont want to traumatise her help please
 
Feed her in there, put water in there, toys in there, treats, bones, sit in it yourself, anything to show her its not a scary space! Sleep with a blanket in your bed for a few nights then put it in the crate so it smells like you...

Tbh though is she taking the p*ss? Chlo used to howl, I used to get her out, fuss her, try again, she'd howl, I'd take her out....see the process here?! One night my OH said "ENOUGH", leave her, she'll stop, dragged me upstairs. 15mins of whining later, she stopped and we've never had a problem again!
 
ive tried the treats and food toys etc she just stands at the opening and refuses to move with her tail between her legs i thought forcing the issue was against the principle of them or am i being too soft
 
Forcing them in is but sometimes you have to realise she's taking the mick! Although if she wont go in at all then she probably is just scared.

I'd set aside a few hours, sit next to the crate with her on her lead, and just don't give up until she goes in! Will she eat treats from just inside the door - i.e. lean her head inside? If so, keep doing that until she'll put her feet in etc etc.

They WILL go in, it just takes patience!

However, if there is a high chance she's been abused previously, I wouldn't push it.
 
This behaviour is common in older dogs, it's alot easier to introduce puppies to crates than older dogs who are clue up:rolleyes:
Is it jsut that she is putting the stoppers on?
OR
Is she going in but making a fuss?
If you really need to use that crate, I would percevere, take her for a good run and get her tired, then put her in the crate in whichever room you are going to be in for the longest time, so maybe do it tonight when your are settled to watch the tv and place her in the crate near to you with her goodies and her tea.
It does not mean jsut because she does not wan to go in, that she has had a bad experience, most dogs you plce in an open kennel will place holy hell, I crate trined the 2 lurcher pups I had recently, One went in the crate no bother and the other played hell, I jsut kept wearing him out and putting him in the crate I had in the living room with me, where I could hush him if he cried, but aslong as he was in our company he was fine, when I went out he was placed in the doggy room in a crate, wher ehe no doubt made a fuss, but he was always quiet when I returned home, within a week he was going in when told.
 
thanks i have been trying this afternoon and with a lot of coaxing i got her in and she laid down with treats and chewies and lots of praise and strokes didnt shut her in so hopefully she will get the idea
 
Our cat sleeps in our pups crate, we regularly have to evict him before Skye can go to bed, she will go in ok no fuss, but has to be told to go in, the sofa is a far better option!
