Dog cruelty at Badminton?

sorry not read all comments so im prepared to be shot down - dogs, horses, shows go together and the many years I have been going to badminton and many other horse shows I have never been bothered with dogs in fact I love seeing them having a great day of excersise with thier owners ( better than shut up all day ) - ok you have the owner who cant control you have the owner that doesnt take water blah blah blah BUT on the whole dogs should be allowed to go - educate the minority of bad owners dont ruin it for the majority of good owners
and ummmm yes I have taken dogs in past :)

One did get loose and into the lake ,thankfully they just got it back before the horse arrived.

That would be something my dog would do  (the dog we don't take to Badminton!)

We were in one of the lakeside hospitality tent things and the dog that got loose fancied a swim, luckily there wasn't a horse on course.

We take one of our two dogs, who walks fabulously on the lead and causes no harm to other people, dogs or horses. Because the weather was so hot on the weekend he only came with my parents on show jumping day so they could sit in the shade with the dog and watch the SJ on the big screen.

Our other dog is as good as gold but loves water and would go mental near the lake if she wasn't allowed in.

Well, if you were to bring shooting loose dogs in, it would have to be done by professional riflemen. You could also use eagles, especially if they were terriers, nasty little yappy things.

Reguardless, "Loose Dogs will be SHOT!" and a couple of scary looking men with guns will put people off, even if they're only water pistols!!!

I was there and saw someone hit a collie very hard after it jumped up and made the owner/handler spill some of his pint. My friend had to stop me from saying something :(

Sorry, but a dog causing a spillage of alcohol is a very serious offence!

(thats a joke, would probably have poured his pint on him meself!)

There is something wrong with people who don't like animals or children.

Perfect hasn't intimated that they dislike animals or children. After all why would they be on an equine forum if animals of one sort or another didn't have at least a passing interest for them.............

I agree with not allowing dogs at these big three day events. As for children - they love it, and I can't see why you wouldn't allow them there - it's a purely personal decision of the parent, surely.....

LOL, my friend said he was probably more peeved at the fact he'd have to go and pay over the odds again for another pint!! LOL

I just cant believe what has been posted on here about banning dogs. Again the minority are ruining it for the majority. I did not go to Badminton this year for two reasons one of them being that I thought it was too hot for me and my dogs. I have two very well behaved beagles that are obedient and very well cared for. I took both of my dogs to Badminton and Gatcombe last year and like a couple of other responsible owners on here I took a large bottle of water and when I was stood still watching I stood in the shade with my dogs where ever possible.

Dogs are a big part of the countryside and equestrian world so IMO should not be banned from such events. For years I did not go to the Royal Show because dogs were not allowed and every year some prat would take their dog leave it in the car and it would die because of the heat.

IMO if a dog gets loose then the owner should be reprimanded by a steward and then they should be fined. It is part of responsible dog ownership to ensure that you are in control of your dog in public places.

I fail to see why I should be punished for someone else's complete lack of responsibility.

Sorry for the rant, I did not see the woman hitting the dog but rest assured that if I have been there I would have kicked her up the arse too!

Interest is not the same as liking. Huntsmen have an interest in foxes...

Perfect stated that maybe kicking a dog was a step in the right direction. If you think that could be said by someone who likes dogs then you really are strange. However, I think that you are just saying it because you like following me round the forum and disagreeing for the sake of it. :D

Ah, yes, I'd missed the bit about kicking the dog.....

I wasn't aware that I was following you around the forum - maybe it's just that we are interested in the same subjects - albeit comming from different sides of the coin ;)

So don't get too excited - you haven't got your own personal stalker yet.......:D

oh b****r :(

Dogs should not be allowed to attend any events that involve horses - racing, 3 day or otherwise - as there are always problems involving fighting, incessant barking, unprovoked attacking, escaping to run amok not to mention poop not being picked up by the handler of the dog. I do agree, however, that there are many well behaved dogs out there and it is nice for them to be able to accompany their human to outdoor functions but, unfortunately, there is a large percentage of ignorant people that shouldn't be allowed to own dogs let alone being out in public with them!
I am a dog and horse lover and I always leave my dogs at home if I'm to be visiting an equestrian event.
To be really flippant; you wouldn't take a horse to a dog show would you?
Leave your dogs at home where they're safe and comfortable besides, isn't it wonderful being greeted by your canine pets when you do arrive home? ;)

No I dont like some owners !!!! the point I was making a little tounge in cheek perhaps was it was good that someone had bothered to control their dog !!!
a lot people just gaze or take little notice of there dogs being out of contol or their children behaving like savages running about in shops/public screaming and pulling stuff off shelves or generaly being a PIA ,and dogs why drag the poor things round all day at a big event I guess some dogs can handle it but it must be stressfull for others...

barefoot...

**snort!!** ;)

Andik, that beagle in your sig is oozing cuteness!!

I went to Badminton on Sunday and there were a lot of dogs I felt sorry for. I wouldn't take mine, it was way too hot and heard many getting stood on, people letting the, walk on too loose leads, resulting on them not keeping an eye on them and them getting trampled. It knackered me out (I'm only 22) and I only have two legs to get sore, not four, and I had my shorts and vest top on, not my black fur coat!! I did not see anyone actually hit a dog but what your saying from it being on the BBC is disgusting. Hope she has realised she was caught on camera and is totally ashamed of herself.

We were sat by a woman with two dogs at one fence, and she literally rugby tackled it when the horse went past as it wanted to chase it!!

We took my boyfriends dog for the first time this year and she had a wonderful day, mainly sat by the lake with us in the bar! She's a yard dog though so well used to horses running round and not at all bothered.

I read the first few pages and skipped the rest. Over here in New Zealand on the bottom of I think all entry forms is the notice "dogs not allowed" and no-one takes their dogs. They are left safely at home in their kennels/runs. And everyone is happy. But it does take effort on the part of organisers to start the trend and ensure the rules are followed!! Until leaving the dogs at home becomes "normal practice"!!

You did well to skip most, its gets repetitive. Please don't say "everyone is happy" because they are not. I was there the entire day WITH my dogs, granted we were moving around but I really did not see all this behaviour everyone keeps banging on about - or is jumping on the bandwagon to follow someone elses quotes. For heavens sake, at every event, there will be the parent who can't control their children, the teenagers who get drunk, the people who make idiotic comments etc etc. Of course there will be "some" people who are stupid with their dogs. The vast majority kept them under control and I saw plenty of people stopping in the shade/watering their dogs and didn't see ONE example of someone falling over extending leads.

I also had more people stopping me this year to meet greet and cuddle the dogs all the way round than ever before and we had a lovely day out. Was there another Badminton going on? I seem to remember a pretty nice crowd, a lovely warm day and lots of smiley faces? but perhaps that is just us..

I too have taken my dogs - and love seeing dogs there - but what happens when a dog gets loose and causes a horrific accident?!

You may think "tut  that wont happen! Stop being stupid" but who will wish they had banned dogs if Opposition Buzz doesn't concerntrate and flips over a fence because a loose dog has darted out?? Or heaven forbid a horse spooks and our WFP ends up over his shoulder and breaks his neck?

Yes they are highly trained athletes but under all that they are prey animals and at some point there's a chance instinct takes over.

These things are extreme I know and unlikely to happen, but as we all know, horses and riders have DIED over 2'6" fences, every year we campaign for safety but for the sake of putting a few people out we are letting these potentially lethal accidents walk around next to our top riders and horses.

It is only a matter of time and law of averages before something bad does happen and how bad will you feel if, for the sake of leaving Rover at home for the day, you are faced with the loss of a great horse or rider?

I know I don't want to take the chance.

I ended up having to take my dog this year as we stayed with friends who live nearby. I NEVER take my dog to things like that ever and wouldn't again - i trudged round with our picnic and 2L of water and dog bowl so he could have a drink and not get too hot. I agree that they shouldn't be allowed at events my pet hate is those stupid extendable leads where owners have no control!

No, there was a loose border collie who chased a horse after the 4th fence, the one with the little houses. It came back after a few mins. Not sure if it was on a lead or whether it had slipped its collar. Sigh. It's going to happen I think.

Didn't see owner hitting dog I'm afraid.

Yes i saw the border collie running after a horse aswell.

I think its nice to have your dogs with you but they should be kept under control.
