Hi guys,
Has any had a DNA test done on there dogs to determine breed ? who did you use and how did it go .

So one of spaniels I brought from a horse trader as a puppy he’s now 7 . He was very close to death and far to young to be away from its mum . I essentially convinced The seller to let me have him for £150 as he was very very ill.

She said he was an working English springer spaniel from Ireland . However the litter didn’t look pure so either they where either not all the same litter or they are crossed . I think the other looked a little collie like .

As he’s grown older I am starting to wonder If he’s a full spaniel . He does have some different traits to my other English springers he’s much taller about 10/15 cm and stocker . He’s also got a flatter head/ skull and a deeper chest . His coats slight different coat it’s a double coat but very hairy with a lot more curls the the others .

He’s liver and white . Has a typical spaniel around the face and in character . Love water and has web feet . He has a high drive .

A couple of friends that breed have different opinions . One doesn’t think he’s pure because pure because of his height and stockiness of him . Whereas another said he thinks he’s a really nice example of a more traditional ESS but is taller than should be and thinks the coat maybe down to being away from mum/poorly as a pup .

Anyway we are thinking of doing a doggy DNA test more for personal interest and to see if we should be watching for any health issue

I did a wisdom panel on my little hound, she's a beagley hound type but not quite the right build etc. Came from Ireland, not quite a rescue but...

She came back 50% beagle 25% foxhound 25% unknown mixed breed. My guess is either she's working bred and her parents were both mostly beagley or one parent is beagle one foxhound Jack Russel cross. Either way, it was accurate enough for what I wanted.

I used Embark’s breed+health test, there’s usually a discount code going.
I think both WP and Embark can detect breeds back three generations so a cross further back may not show up. I had a lot of fun with it for my mystery bag stray lurcher though

I’ve heard the dna tests are not accurate unless you have the parents’ dna tested too. Do you have any photos? Mine were definitely out of a springer mum, never met the dad and they were/are both very oversized. My avatar is Zak, who we lost in July.

Thanks everyone I will look at both . I think if he is a cross he’s more likely to be one fall springer parent and one springer x something other . On the picture front I will try figure out how you do it !
