hey!!
Well my just turned 1 yr old choc male lab is driving me up the wall. He is a really excitable lab and finds everything wonderfull.
When we are out walking, if we walk past another dog, he gets all excited and sometimes barks and jumps up whaling around because he wants to go over to it!

It so irratating as he is not an aggressive dog what so ever, not got a nasty bone in his body, he is very strong and we use a halti on him, I dont know what to do as people may think he is from aggresive from what he is doing. He never used to do this, its just started all of a sudden xx

v what do u think i can do?

Sorry just annoying me hahaxx

Oh he's the same age as my lab

What do you do when he does this? Does he get a reward from it? (Ie. does he get to say hello to the dog?) You need to not allow him to say hello to other dogs until he is calm... and being good...

Do you do clicker training with him by any chance? Is just i find mine learns much quicker when I use the clicker...

Mine can also be a little over enthusiastic when saying hello to other dogs, so i do know what its like!

Its irratiing isnt it hehe!

i never allow anyone or any other dogs to greet him untill he is calm! Even if he is sat and when they get close, i correct him make him sit,, then they can greet him unless he is calm. That is not really a problem!

Its more of the, for eg: if im walking through the village and another person walking the dog walks the opposite way, he can be walking fine then just all of a sudden, jumps barking and whailing around trying to turn around to see the dog! I have started to clicker train! did not do it when he was younger!

His recall is pants to hahahxxx

Do you have another dog?x

No - just one dog... although he spends alot of time with my parents dog (when I stay with them) and we are getting a second dog in the new year some time.

I see what you mean... You could try telling him to 'leave it' just as or just before you think he might go mad? Leave it always works on my dog... started by training him to leave treats and worked up from there. But if I don't get the command in early enough it can be hard to get him back under control. So you have to be quick!

I do have help though - from a dog trainer... she comes every couple of weeks. So I guess you could maybe try signing up for an obedience class? That might help as well?

Have you thought about trying a whistle for recall? Mine responds mucgh better to whistle commands?

Yeah, i would love another one, i think we would have to get something older and calmer though hehe!

Yeah he knows "leaves it" he is one for nabbing things lol and running to his bed! He knows he has done wrong as if he picks up a shoe, he wil look at you, you tell him to leave it and he will drop it! bless him hehe

Yeah we were going to training classes, but the one we were going to wasnt very good, so we have yet to find another one!
Think we are going to do agility when we have sorted this barking out lol!
I have just bought a whistle to, start with the recall! how did you train yours for recall?x

i have always found that choc labs are def more excitable than the black or yellows i would try distracting him or use training discs, has he ever been to training classes they may be usefull

Whistle recall..

but you don't need it - just do new cue (whistle - 3 blasts means come) then old cue (verbal or visual?) straight after. Click and treat (Or just treat if no clicker!) when he comes... he will begin to associate the whistle with coming back.

Start training at home, indoors and only use whistle outside when you sure he understands what it means...

This is how I have trained it (method from dog trainer on dog board - am not claiming this as my own method!). I find Loki responds really well to it.

widgettidings : thankyou very much for your help. im going to turn over a new leaf and start doing that. If i whistle normally he seem to come better to that. so hopefully he might respond a bit better.

Oo and thought i would let you know, friend brought her dogs down today, and did some exercised with buddy, and he was so good, did not bark once, walked calmly past them back and forth, so hopefully, maybe getting somewhere, i was very proud of him hehe

Have you ever watched the programme The Dog Whisperer on Skiy? It is brilliant and great for giving you tips on dealing with all kinds of behaviour problems. If you've got Sky start watching, he is fantastic (and quite cute !).
