ive a retired gun dog (springer spaniel). shes exceptioally well trained until it comes to food and animal carcasses...and now dog poo! shes a theif and im always having to fight to get rotten dead animal parts from her which is ok, seeing as she has been a gun dog (she drops birds no bother) but anyway, im kinda deviating from the point of this post. iv caught her eating dog poo and no matter how much she gets into trouble for it, continues to switch off and wolf it down before i get a chance to drag her away. she did eat puppy poo last year, which i recon is pretty normal, but im sure there are no puppies near my house any longer.
she has addisons disease, an imbalance in sodium and potassium levels and is on medication thats regulated often.
any one any ideas why shes doing this?? apart from trying to make me sick?!!

I am so sorry, I totally read the thread title wrong and read HORSE instead of DOG - god that IS very gross and no sorry cannot help wth that

Can't help as to why but my rescue collie does it occasionally. When we first got him he did it all the time. *heave*...

It is a very common habit in dogs called coprophagia, and it is virtualy impossible to stop it. All you can do it prevent her actually getting to the poo, and if that means muzzling her when out on walks then that is what yo uwill have to do. Also, make sure you are very vigilant in picking up her own poo, and don't let her see you doing it as that will make it more interesting for her. Hopefully after a period of deprivation she will lose the taste for it. It is a very distressing habit to live with, but not unusual.

i've heard of dogs eating hourse poo and the trimmings of horse hoof after the farriers been, but never eating dog poo.

could always phone your vet and ask if they know anything about it??

Was she doing this before she was on the medication?
As it may be that there is goodness in the poo from the medication she is on, dogs seem to know when there is! like when they eat puppy poo because of the goodness in it from the mothers milk.

2 things you can try - feed her a small amount of pineapple - apparently that works on some dogs - although my fussy b****r wouldn't eat it!!! - or a teaspoon of seaweed powder - that works on our lab - she goes through phases of doing it - gross!!! good luck

Hi,
My dad's dog does it ALL the time!! I dunno why tho?!!
He's also tried the pineapple trick which did work but then he stopped cos she stopped eating it!
Now she's eating it again!!
We have been told to put chilli powder on the poo's and when they go to eat it it'll put them right off hopefully forever!!
But obviously if your out walking and its others poo's this could be quite hard!!
Sorry cant think of ne thing else except maybe a muzzle which has been suggested before!!

My curly retriver eats his own poo pretty much straight away after hes done it though he doesnt do it as much now but its still pretty gross because then he stinks! Caught him eating cat poo aswell yesterday morning and thats even worse!
