Any suggestions on why.......she's fed well and has treats in between meals, but is eating her own faeces! My horse has done this in the past and the vet said not to worry as he was just being horrid! I've known dogs to eat horse faeces but not their own.........HELP

I know puppies tend to eat their own sometimes. Is she a pup? Both my 2 eat the horse poo & one of mine eats cat poo. Yuk - I just make sure they're wormed regular.

She's 9 and wormed regularly, rather partial to Ralphs poo as well! Has a balanced diet.......maybe just revolting

Our youngest Lab did this as a youngster - she would eat it while it was coming out of her mother

It was a habit we had to break, because quite often she'd come in and throw it all up, all over the house

We made sure we cleared it all up ASAP to stop her, and for a long time I kept her tied up in the yard to stop her following other dogs around, plus we smacked her whenever we found her doing it. We were going to resort to the electric collar method, but she seemed to grow out of it after about four months!

Good luck with yours, it is a horrid habit

my younger bitch eat other dogs poo and my other bitchs...but i found that i when i swaped their diet to raw/bones she didnt do as much and almost stopped, but not all dogs have this diet, theres so much rubbish in certain dog feeds it dosent get digested enough and comes out adiable to other dogs....sometimes it can be a dominent thing or habit from when they were pup...some grow out of it ...some need abit more persueding not to eat it
you often find that dogs will eat horses/cats/chicken /foxes/cattle poo...yuk
even if they are wormed regulary and have supplements in their diet, some dogs are more disgusting than others

some have tried giving their dogs pineapple, not sure if this works though

everytime i catches my dogs doing it or even thinking about eating poo i say firmly NO and maybe shout at her and even even a smack on her bum or anything just to try to stop her

im not sure about dogs out my friends horse used to do this,
when she rang the vet he said it was becausse he was lacking in a certian vitamin or mineral, this may be the case with your doggiee

It called Coprophagia - if you google it lots will come up.

Apparently the dog's diet can make a difference - my dog is fed raw food and it is apparently v. rare that dogs on raw food eat their own faeces, but some commercial foods (not all) come through only partially digested - so they still have food value (YUK) so some dogs eat them...

Eating horse poo is cos it tastes sweet (partially digested cellulose - ie sugars in poo)

Am reading a fab book about dog nutrition (in general) - if you interested - is called feeding your dog for life by diane morgan

Yes they are - the amount of 'quality time' my dog spends with his willy is quite repulsive

Forgot to add - watch how you react to the behaviour - apparently it can become a learnt behaviour if they carry on doing it - you need to nip it in the bud. Am afraid I don't have any expereince of how tho

Best bet is to remove the poo as soon as the dog has done its business.

Out walking if your dog is off lead, only real option is to muzzle your dog, otherwise just something you'll have to deal with.

Not ideal I know, but it will prevent your dog from eating any poo.

There is a product available on the online bestpets pharmacy called DETER. The product is a chewable tablet that stops dogs and puppies from consuming own Facies. Its under the dog products section, and if you then look under Digestion - may be worth a try??

Prevent yes but not cure. The dog is most likely eating the poo for a reason. Vitamin B tablets (just regular human ones from Boots) should sort the problem.
