Usually we have him confined, but occassionally my Lab escapes to the Loch just over the road for a swim, really busy road there was a small boy knocked down yesterday, anyway have been looking at the dog fences, they all seem to be in the region of £200, does anyone have any experience of these as don't want to shell out that sort of money and it not work.

Do you mean the Freedom Fence where the dog wears a collar and it gives them a warning and then a small electric shock if they cross it? If so I have had one for years and swear by it. My rotty was a real escape artist (sadly she died three weeks ago and now I'm crying again) and this fence was a humane and completely reliable way of keeping her in. It meant she could wander wherever she wanted and I still knew she was safe without me constantly watching her or calling her in. We still have the ridgeback who doesn't even have to wear the collar most of the time she knows the boundaries and stays within them. We now have a six month old Rotty puppy who learnt the boundaries within three days. Definitley worth the investment. One word of warning if your dog loses the collar they cost about £100 to replace!!!

Mine aren't but I think you have to make it clear that they do not cross it without their leads on so that they understand when they can cross and when they can't. In my opinion this type of fence is a life saver for dog owners and takes all the worry out of letting them run free on your property. Good luck!

Hi ! I just wanted to agree with the points Hadleigh has made. We have used our dog fence for 6 years (since we moved here) and the only additional outlay has been for batteries for the collars.

I did some training with all 3 of the dogs we have had here to show them the boundary initially. They all learnt very quickly. My husband's pointers have never crossed the boundary and my dalmatian did so only once. I think they are invaluable because you can't rely on people to shut gates and my dalmatian could not be relied upon to behave if out without me.

We did get a replacement collar free of charge - it depends on your supplier. They also told me that some dogs respect the fence more than others, the initial training is important.

I have friends who disapprove of these fences thinking the dogs are always being shocked but our current english pointer has never received any shock - the warning buzz was more than enough for her to step back.

Good luck

Kx

Just one word of warning. My brother-in-law agreed to take a clients lab to the vets in his van (he's a gardener). Put dog in van, and drove out gates, dog started wimpering and yelping
