6 dogs were removed.

"In 2006, David Reid was banned for two years from keeping animals and fined £300 after pleading guilty to cutting off part of both ears of two bull terrier dogs, cruelly ill treating them and causing them unnecessary suffering at Banff Sheriff Court."

He's been jailed for 6 months and his brother for 4 months. They've both been banned from keeping dogs for 5 years. :( Surely, especially as a second offence it should be for life.

Horrible and Disgusting!

why would he cut their ears? :( people like this simply don't make sense to me. sickening!

Dog fighters dock their dogs ears for two reasons, firstly the other dog will have less to grab hold of and second because it makes it harder to read the dogs body language which gives it an advantage.

I agree, it's sickening.

thats awful =/ I almost wish I'd never asked! poor dogs :( I know its a wider problem than thought though. The lady that rescued the litter that I have one of had a caller ask for pups dead or alive =/ and I've heard of people asking for runts.. to give older dogs the taste of blood!!

I hope they get a rough ride in prison  they deserve it.

Unfortunately dog fighting is rife everywhere. I was contacted by a local rescue center and offered a young Bull terrier. They called us because they knew we had Bullies before. They didn't want him going just anywhere; because, apparently our small Norfolk town was a hotspot for dog fighting. We took him in and he became a well loved family pet for 12yrs.

lexie: im not realy that sure tbh: but i think its much the same as in england- they will no doubt be assessed by an "expert"

i would imagine that seeing as these dogs were all used for fighting that they will be unable to be re-homed, sadly. :(

Thats what I was thinking, and wondering why they had not done it already, rather than nursing the dogs back to health, only to be PTS anyway.

Come the day of reckoning when I get my AK47 and cloak of invisibility(OK it's just a recurring dream) these 2 can go top of my list....and it's a loooong list.

Yes I think the dogs have to be kept pending the court case as with the RSPCA. Dogs removed by them can't be rehomed unless the owner signs them over or the courts make an order.

Oh think this is even worse. If 6 dogs, actively used for fighting, have been removed the chances of them having a "normal" life are pretty small. Is the SPCA tied to the RSPCA? The normal "discreet" policy in England is that "pitbull types" do not tend to make it out.

And, while I yet again boringly fly the staffie flag, I would wonder if a rescue, with stretched resources, would choose to try to rehabilitate a fighting dog. Extremely happy to be proved wrong, but logically think these dogs will be put down.

i believe the sspca is a separate charity to the rspca.

i dont think they will be using resources to rehabilitate these dogs- they will be put down eventually im sure: but they need to be kept until such times as the owner signs them over to the sspca, or they have a court order. in the mean time these dogs still need to be cared for. its not their fault. no voice no choice.
