Dog-friendly camping/B&B, Brecon Beacons

I have a full week booked off in June, some walking boots, a tent, a dog and a vague plan to incorpate a jaunt up Pen y Fan as well as a day on the coast. :D

Any recommendations? I don't need a fancy site (my friends are raving about Pencelli Castle but they don't allow dogs), just somewhere with hot showers and preferably a facility for hot breakfasts nearby. And where would be the best place to head to spend a day on the beach from there?

I can't recommend any where dog friendly near Pen Y Fan to stay I'm afraid. Also it's a bit of a trek from there to the coast, however, The Gower would probably be the best beaches to head for.

If you stay anywhere near Crickhowell/Abergavenny/Hereford I can recommend some nice pubs. Also a good place to go riding.

If it's good hill walking & nice beaches you're after you could always come our way (Snowdonia National Park) where everything is much more 'on your door step'. We could meet up as I'm lucky enough not to have to work, once i've done my smallholder chores that is (just in case the OH is reading!)

Thanks for that davisn. :) I was thinking Pen y Fan as we did Snowdon last year and fancied a change, although thinking about it it would make more sense to head that away again - I have family in Porthmadog who might put me up for a night and I know Black Rock is dog friendly. Do you have any mountains that won't be crawling with inappropriately dressed tourists? :p

LOL We have a mountain for everyone, although I suggest you stay away from Snowdon if appropriately dressed tourists are important. I know what you mean though. I did Snowdon last year, but I tend to just walk straight from our house if I'm doing the national park. There are some really lovely dog friendly beaches around, including Dinas Dinlle (far end past the air strip), Nefyn & Newborough.

Hound of the Sea is the best person to recommend which mountains to visit to avoid the crowds & also best for dogs. I'll give her a shout & get her to recommend some for you. She also owns a small B&B. She doesn't advertise that she allows dogs but she has been known to let the odd well behaved one stay, alternatively I have a spare stable or outbuilding & am only half a mile up the road. There are quite a few camp site around here that allow dogs.

However, don't let me talk you out of going to the Beacons (used to live in that area before we moved up here 2 years ago), they are lovely as well ;-)
 
I have to disagree with the above about dof friendly campsites. There's Grawen which is about 1 mile from the base of pen y fan or if you wanted to be slightly closer to the beach, there's dan yr ogof in the Swansea valley. It's only an hour ish between pen y fan and the coast.
 
Hi blackcob, I think any of the other Snowdonia mountains are pretty quiet apart from maybe Tryfan, but I don't think that is very dog friendly as the top is just a mass of big boulders. I have to say we have only taken Murphy up Mynydd Mawr up till now, we are building him up to bigger walks. But from past experience Aran is a nice walk just next to Snowdon. Of course my favourite has to be the Nantlle ridge at the top of the road but it is a good days walk, though you can just do part of it. The Rivals are a much shorter walk but fabulous views of both sides of the Lleyn peninsula. Pen-yr-Ole Wen from Ogwen Cottage is a very steep climb but makes you feel virtuous. Moel Hebog is handy from Beddgelert which has camping but I am not sure if it is dog friendly. I am certainly happy to have well behaved dogs staying but have to say I am already booked up for half of June.

Have a look on the Camping and Caravan Club website, they have tons of campsites listed and even some that aren't Club sites and most of them are dog friendly :D

There is this place http://www.bishops-meadow.co.uk/ never stayed there but drive past it enough ;) Or there is this one http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=2503 both are just on the outskirts of Brecon itself

Then there is this place which is near Hay on Wye (perfectly situated to walk Hay Bluff and Pen yr Fan!!!) I know these people and they are really great fun , and would be very accommodating I'm sure.

BC, wherever you end up can you let me know some recommendations as I might head that way for a long weekend later this year, with a very similar plan in my mind:)
 
Will do, Spudlet (we probably ought to go together, my OH is refusing to come with me as he is allergic to the outdoors :rolleyes:). :p

Thanks to all for suggestions so far, have got a hectic couple of weeks ahead while I finish up university for the year so I might end up flipping a coin on the 1st June to decide which way to go. :o
 
If you want somewhere near(ish) Portmadog to stay my aunt and uncle have a cabin at Bronaber - its self catering, cheap and dogs are allowed as long as you hoover the place afterwards :D
