Dog gnawing foot - opinions...

Opinions/advice wanted from all you knowledgeable HHO dog people. Smiley's always been a very clean girl and licks/grooms herself often, including her feet. Lately though she has been really nibbling her feet and I am now paranoid they are more red/pink and smoother than normal. I have seen dogs before that have eaten their feet as a behavioural problem/nervous twitch but I'm not convinced that this is the problem?

Is she walked much on roads where it's been gritted?

Its not really been cold enough on the south coast for gritters. So its just the beach, muddy fields and the odd bit of pavement/cycle path.

It looks like a contact allergy, initially I'd wash her feet off everytime you come back from a walk, see if that helps xx
