I took my little Bichon puppy for her first trim today at the groomers. It went well, was a one on one session (not a conveyor belt system), and I was allowed to stay. She was only trimmed lightly with scissors and a tiny nail clip.

But, he's snipped her little vagina. I feel awful. She did yelp when he trimmed the hair at the end of it, and I did think then that maybe he'd cut her. But I was close enough to see that there was no blood. And put it down to general fussing over a new experience. However playing with her this evening, it does look as if he caught her.

Obviously the last thing I expect is for my dog to be damaged, but does it occasionally happen - or do I never darken his door again??

No experience at all with trimming/clipping (thank heavens for GSDs), but that doesn't sound right to me at all. Did you get her from a breeder fairly local to you ? If so I would be asking the breeder to recommend someone, although I do appreciate that a show trim is different to a pet one.

If you're happy otherwise with the way he did it I probably would go back again, but make sure you mention what happened today so that they are extra careful next time.

Of course accidents happen, but I don't think I'd be going back there again. He either cut your dog and didn't even know he'd done it, or he knew he had and hoped you wouldn't notice since it didn't bleed. Neither would be acceptable for me.
Not the nicest introduction to clipping and trimming for your poor little pup. Hope she's not sore for long.

I know you're right ribbons. I was suppose I was just double checking myself. Gutting.

I am a qualified Dog Groomer OP so may be of some help. Accidents can and do happen. When you are using blades and scissors its unrealistic to think they don't. However, they are rare and IMO should never happen on a first groom for a puppy. Was he a qualified groomer? was he experienced in grooming your breed? I would look around and ask other Bichon owners who they use and recommend. I have to say though that just because a groomer lets you stay does not mean they are a good groomer. A professional groomer will rarely ever let the owner stay, simply because the dog always behaves better when the owner is not there. They often are more worried than the dog. Anyway I hope your puppy is no worse for ware.

Thanks CD for taking the time to reply. Yes a qualified groomer used to Bichons. I completely understand what you're saying in relation to the owner being present. But it was important for me to be there, because I was interested in the process, wanted to make sure my pup was well taken care of, and wasn't prepared to leave my pup in future wirh someone I didn't trust 100%. I was sat in a chair some distance away, and didn't interfere or talk to the pup. But, I take the point of behaving better perhaps when the owner isn't there.

I've been recommended another groomer by a shitsu owner so may give them a buzz for a chat.

I feel I've ledt Daisy down so badly.....

Oh amymay you have not let Daisy down at all. Try not to worry too much. Your pup will always be well taken care of with a reputable groomer. The most important thing at the moment for your puppy is to get confident and enjoy the grooming procedure not how good the end result is. The groom should take no longer than 1 hour 15 mins. That is more than enough time on the table for a pet bichon groom. That should include bathing, blow-dry, clipping and scissoring.

Thanks so much. Not in my neck of the woods are you? :D
