I had felt some sympathy for this man, but like Murphy's Minder, I had not realised the dogs were left for 7 hours. I had thought it all happened very quickly. These dogs were let down in the worst way.
Why i dont take my dogs in vehices unless for work, farmdogs, and are really concerned for there welfare always have water for them, how could you forget them yonks ago left a dog on a warm day whilst poppedinto a shop polce lookng at car as dog i n there never forgot it and lesson learnt but day wasn't stifeling hot.
I like to think that I would never do something like that (and in a way it would be difficult since I never really leaves my dogs alone in the car) but though if I sit on a dog show and hear ''Could the owner of so and so car come and let out your dog, if not...'' I do think not so positive things about the owner, it does not mean I can not still feel sorry for both these two police dogs and this police officer.
It is horrible beyond words that his dogs died that way but for me, there is still a difference between making a mistake and leaving them in there with the intention of ''frying'' them to death. I also makes mistakes but luckily it have (yet, touches wood) never had any similar consequences.
Also, something I have yet not seen any comments about, it does not sound as if he left them in his car parked somewhere out in nowhere, surely somebody walked past or somewhere close to his car for all that time? Why did nobody else react? If nothing else, why did nobody react on that they were not in one of the police vehicles with an air cooling unit, where they should have been?
Maybe there needs to be better routines on the police station to make sure that police dogs are transferred to a police vehicle with an air cooling unit? Either way, I simply think people need better education about how hot it actually can get in a car and how fast, in combination with facts about that dogs does not sweat the same way as us etc.
Sorry absolutely no sympathy here. If he was known to be suffering from depression, then somebody should have stepped in to help with their care.
As others have said, 7 hours is far too long, hot or not to be left in a vehicle.
Very, very sad turn of events. Hopefully the death of these 2 dogs will ensure other people are extra vigilant in future and new proceedures are put in place to prevent it from happening again.
If he had depression and OCD, somebody should have been keeping a close eye on him. Poor dogs, but I also feel very sorry for him. It doesnt sound at all malicious.
As I have said on the other post, if he was suffering with both those conditions he and others around him should have taken steps to ensure he wasn't in a position of care to anything. Being a police officer I think that is pretty difficult, but nevertheless, if you are suffering from something that has the ability to make you 'forget' about something for 7 hours then maybe you need the force of will to do the right thing and relieve yourself of your duties.
