Sorry if I've missed it but has your friends father been updated? If someone was looking after my dog and these events were playing out I would be beyond furious.

I hope your friend sees sense soon!

She says she’s kept him updated and is happy to do whatever he’d like them to. So maybe he’s also a blindly follow the vet which is why friend is?! He’s back on Friday so I’m really hoping the poor dog will at least get taken to the vets then. I agree, I would be distraught if it was my dog and she hadn’t been taken straight to the vet.

I know it all sounds odd and I really hope that Ive maybe heard some hyped up version but I’ve known the friend for 14 years and doubt she’s making it up. Unfortunately I think it’s more likely that she’d blindly follow vets advice 🙁

"If you think your canine companion could be having a stroke, this is an emergency. Rather than waiting for more symptoms to develop, it is crucial to seek veterinary attention as soon as the stroke occurs.

Prompt veterinary treatment is very important, and any delay could have an impact on your canine companion’s long-term health."

People can be very resistant to vets bills. I wonder if that is a factor in agreeing none necessary. Also if your friend doesn’t know dogs at all then you would believe the vet I suppose. We trust experts.

My cat is insured to the hilt by a reputable insurance company. They paid out for the consultation and euthanasia of Madam Carrie Cat immediately. Not for her cremation which would have been a joint one.
The Terrorist Cat (RC) is insured with the same company.
Old Horse at 30 has aged out of his insurance. YO and equine vets have it recorded on their notes that he's to be pts if thought necessary and they can't get hold of me.

Oh dear, well at least its eaten something. If it gets any worse maybe try a different vet by calling the emergency vet centre. That's what we did when my puppy ate 3 cupcake sized chocolates with peanut butter inside. It was Easter Sunday!!! He is fine now though :) I forgot to link this with the last update. Sorry

Have had the morning update on the dog, no improvement :( She's not eating this morning - they did at least get a bit of chicken in to her yesterday so she's had something but it wont be anything near enough. Trying to be as supportive as I can to friend as she's very fragile at the moment and stopped talking to me yesterday when I was pushing her to get the dog to the vet and at least if she's talking to me I can still try and make suggestions. I'm almost at the point though where it's too upsetting to keep hearing about it when I can't get friend to take her to vet and get her help. Tbh everything she says just makes it sound even worse and I can't believe friend doesn't realise how ill the poor dog must be.

Unfortunately as far as friend is concerned she's still doing the right thing as she's doing what the vet has said - she's sleeping downstairs with the dog, not leaving it unattended, trying to make things as comfortable as possible for her at her house so she really is trying as far as she knows how. To me the vet has a huge amount to answer for, if the vet had of said they wanted to see the dog, they would have seen it on Sunday or any day since. I don't know what was said to the vet but it was the vet who diagnosed a stroke over the phone so they must have been told enough to know it was fairly serious.

The whole situation is so upsetting as we can all clearly see that the dog urgently needs help or sadly possibly even pts and it's so so hard being absolutely powerless to be able to help.

Did they call her back yesterday?

My only other suggestion would be for her to video and post on pet vet corner as they might tell her the dog needs to be seen.

Frankly I wouldn’t be talking to her at all right now, she’s causing unnecessary suffering, dog probably doesn’t give a shit whether she is sleeping with it or not.

Yes, they did call her back - said they still weren't worried about seeing the dog and booked it an appointment for Monday!!

It's a hard one, I'm trying to see it from her side too (which I'm terrible at doing) and I think as far as she can see it, she genuinely think she's doing the right thing as she's following the vets advice. It sadly is complete ignorance and over trusting of the vet - I've tried to persuade her to talk to another vet but she's sticking with the current one :( If I lived closer I would have been dropping in and seeing the dog and ringing my vets on loudspeaker when I was there but sadly she's too far away for it to be an option.

I've known her for years, she's a lovely person, but sadly for this dog at this time, that's not enough. She has no idea she's being cruel.

You say the dog is at her house, is it their usual vet she has contacted ? I can maybe understand the ooh vet giving the choice of not taking the dog in if the symptoms pointed to vestibular, given how expensive they are, but have never had my normal vet refuse to see one of mine when I have phoned, even if I have said I am only slightly concerned.

Even when my dog was being sick and I phoned for advice they told me what to do and if she wasn’t better by the next day to bring her in. I can’t understand a vet saying it’s not necessary to see a dog who is that uncomfortable , it’s all very odd
Agree, If i call my vet with something non routine or that I'm worried about, even if i know its far from urgent (Cecils dew claw for example, wasn't going to kill him but he was miserable) they generally have been able to fit us in that day, sometimes I've had to wait a fair time
The one time i called and said my dog has collapsed they told me to come straight in and ushered me straight through the waiting room.

When my collie could hardly use her back legs I phoned and booked my vet to come to me first thing in the morning with the hope that a good nights sleep would help and I could cancel him. She was almost 14 , she got distressed later and seemed to have lost her sight as well so I took her to the emergency vet, at no time was I told to wait..

That’s how it should be. It’s bad enough having your animal sick or in pain as it is without the worry you can’t see a vet fast enough.

When my elderly retriever had a suspected stroke (never confirmed as there was no point) our vet came to us to check on him out of hours. We decided to put him to sleep at home in his basket as it was clear he was dying and it was the kindest thing to do to help him on his way.

Was the vet who was consulted the dog's regular vet? Or did OP's friend choose a vet from the phonebook? If it's not the regular vet could friend be persuaded to speak to the regular vet?

Sorry for the lack of updates all, I was somewhere with minimal signal over the weekend. I've not had many updates from friend, on Saturday she said the dog had eaten well in the morning for the first time since it had happened and also said that she was having moments of being more herself. I'm hoping they'll still take her to the vets today so I'll try and find out what they say and update you all - just really really hoping the appointment doesn't get cancelled due to the bit of improvement they're seeing.

Hopefully the dog may be healing herself whether it was a stroke or vestibular. I still can't get my head around the vets not wanting to see her and not trying to do anything for her but as the dog has improved a bit friend is probably thinking that the vets were right and didn't need to see her :(

Well I suppose the vets were right, if she gets better. If only they all had crystal balls though! ( I think they should have seen her).
