OK so the two aren't entirely connected......

My dog is due to have the snip in a couple of weeks, he's just over a year old (Scottie). Bit worried about sending him to the vet cos he's a bit territorial ATM and is a little bit snappy with folks he doesn't know. I'm aware that they will muzzle him but they won't leave it on the whole day will they? Also, how long do stitches stay in for?

Secondly, I currently insure said doggit through petplan, policy is due to expire in a couple of weeks and have got renewal notice - gone up slightly to £13 per month. Is it worth staying with them or would you recommend someone else?

Thankies

We insure all our dogs with Petplan - £22 a month each

but we know they pay out on claims and with no hassle

if you are thinking of changing - a lot of the cheaper ones are cheaper because they don't cover 'for life' just a set amount of money, for life cover is what is important to me so that's why we pay higher.

Not sure on stitches?
They shouldn't leave him muzzled while caged, at least I'd hope not!

I would stick with Petplan! Fantastic!
As for the chop well the stitches stay in for 10 days (or that was the case with our dog) . Our vets were superb and allowed us to stay with our dog until the actual operation when we were kicked out (He was 86Kg) so it helped that we could move him as he did tend to dig his heels in! We had him back early afternoon as soon as the anaesthetic had worn off a bit and he was checked....If your dog is aggressive they will only muzzle him probably for initial handling. After the Op. he will be drowsey so will probably just snooze in a cage peacefully. Never known even a real biter to be left muzzled!

I've always used the higher cover option (so condition is covered for life) Was with M&S for dog and two cats and had no problems with them paying out for anything but they increased their prices massively one year despite no claims.

I moved to Tesco last year (again with their higher cover) and have already had one claim pay out and another just going through. Not had any problems with them though I'm dreading my renewal price already

With regards to muzzling, I doubt they'd leave it on him all day. My boxer can be a bit funny and they tend to put a muzzle on when handling him but the nurses are great with him and only use it when they definitely have to.

I would would stick with petplan

As suggested 10 days re stitches

Muzzle will be removed once pre med kicks in, which is basically, not very long, we usually takes muzzles of b4 they go into the kennel, and loop the lead out, so we can grab lead safely without being bitten, dogs are usualluy fine once out of kennel

hi i agree with the others that petplan is brilliant- one of my springers is on that although the other is on tesco and when he swallowed a pair of knickers and had to have emergency laparotomy to have them removed costing 395 then they were great and got the money back the week following so i dunno really????

As for being in for the snip, yeah the usual time is 10 days and they will not leave a muzzle on as afterwards he still be so drowsy from the anaesthesia that he will not be too much of a threat!!

bless him and hope everything goes ok...

Don't worry about the muzzle, it would have to be taken off for the aneasthetic and wouldn't be put back on. If handling is a problem for suture removal you could speak to the vet about doing an internal run with disolvable sutures, therefore won't require any removal.

regarding insurance, I've used tesco and sainsburys and both have paid out, no questions.

Good luck
