I have just received my renewal through for Patch's insurance, and its £22per month now wity Petplan. Have looked at M&S and its cover seems patchy to say the least, with a £1000 limit per year per condition for the standard plan, and the premier plan comes in at the same price as Petplan. Then went on More than, and their quote and cover seem much more reasonable, but the excess is £70+10% of the claim, which could add up to quite a lot....so the real question is who do you insure with and whats the cover like?

Thanks in advance

PS Patch is a 7yrold cross breed

NFU, for the pup, costs something like £250 a year, cover for I think £4000 per illness, per year. Also includes cover for life, so illnesses or injuries would not be excluded when I renew.

I dont see that there is any point insuring with someone awful. Often they wont cover, will argue about it, and then you end up paying the vets AND paying the insurance!

Thanks Flamehead, I had thought about NFU, but was told by someone who worked at one of their offices until very recently that they don't do stand alone dog insurance, but would tag it on to your house insurance policy...is this not the case then?

Mine are with Directline which i think is about £35 for the pair....vet excess is £75 and I choose the premium option which is up to £6k per condition.

Have had them pay out just over £2k for blackthorn poisoning at the beginning of this year and have just left the other spaniel at the vet for grass seed removal from his sinus

Thanks Jo, will get a quote from them too, so far it looks like the Petplan price is standard, maybe at 7 he's getting expensive to insure? But I wouldn't be without it, as I know I couldn't say no to something the vet says he needs!

Try Sainsbury's Daisy is insured with them and I have to say ive been very impressed, the premium is under £20 a month and when I have claimed they paid up very quick and illness is covered for lifetime too.

Thats not the case - because my OH (who pays the insurance) is already a member (and has all the horses with them) we get quite substantial discounts, but you can just insure the dog.

My OH thinks dog is under "home and lifestyle", which is a different department from equine.

I really would recommend them, so far in our first year of owning Chlo, they've paid out for 1 massive stomach op, including anti bios, the op obv, a 5 night stay in hospital, and everything that comes with it (even down to bandages etc), without any question at all. We only paid our £50 excess.
