I am hopefully getting a puppy (exciting!!) who is currently 2 weeks old. I am currently doing all my preparation and lots of research!!

I was wondering who you all insure with? I am looking for lifetime cover per condition. Petplan currently seem to do a good deal at £24. Any feedback on them?

I have just rang NFU (have had horses with them for the past 10 years) but they refuse to give me an approximate price, as the policy will not start in 30 days. I said I am currently doing research and understand the price could fluctuate but they refused point blank to help.. so they have already put me off!

Any other suggestions?

We are with Direct line but will read this with interest as we have not had to make a claim with them (although they were very good with our home ins claim). I don't know if E and L do pet ins but avoid them like the plague!

The best cover is Pet plan lifetime. They are the easiest company to deal with and cover the most problems. The cover for life means no exclusions (as long as not pre-existing) unlike a 12month policy that excludes anything noted on your pets records after 12 months. They are expensive but i've had my rottie insured since the beginning (shes 8 now) claimed around £5000 over those 8years. Never queried a claim and always direct claiming.

Worth checking with your vet who they recommened as if you got into financial hardship they are more likely to accept a direct claim from that company. We wouldnt touch E&L or tesco for claiming direct as they are a nightmare!

Also Pet plan supreme cover is up to £12000 which sounds excessive but i've seem a fair few referral bills come in around that so getting a policy that covers say £4000 wouldnt touch the sides.

Good luck xxxxxxxxxx

What a shame about NFU as my dogs ar insured with them. I have never had a problem and find them very easy to talk too.

I have 3 ongoing claims with them .All I do is send in the invoices and they have always payed up.

If you are buying from a decent breeder your pup should come with a months free insurance, which will give you a bit of breeding space. I have insured with NFU and Tesco in the past and have to say I have never had a problem with them paying up.

Quite right MM,mine are PetPlan insured for a month on leaving, and I recommend Axxa as the alternative policy ,just as good but miles cheaper.

Pet Plan are good but do annual policies as well as lifetime now so make sure you buy the right one. As always avoid E&L. I use Tesco 'cos doggies over eight when I got them so Pet Plan would'nt take them on.

I got my Jack russel puppy 3 weeks ago. He is 13weeks now. I did lots of research into pet insurance for him and i found 'healthy pets' was the cheapest one. I have the lifetime cover for him which is gold and is for maximum benefit and is only £11.23 a month. the first month is £22.46 a month. I found that All the other companies were over £15.
You must be so excited about getting your little pup! I wouldnt be with out mine. He is soooo much fun! he has just had his second jab and i cant wait to get him out in the horsebox with me off to all the competitions with me and my pony. :)

NFU for mine. My staffie who is 7 this year insured for £150 for Loss of Animal, Vet Fees and Permanent health cover is about £11 per month (bearing in mind I have a mutual bonus discount as I have had my policy for a while). rates will vary on breed, value and where you stay too.

petplan life cover-means if he/she gets arthritis/lifetime condition requiring medication you are alwasy covered. Always paid out, never had any issue!

Conversely, we used Tesco when Jake had his cruciate ops and then had an MRI, referral to the RVC, then was PTS. They were fab but wouldn't pay for a second cruciate op on his other knee as they said it was a pre-existing condition. Other than that, I couldn't complain.
