Our pup has been neutered today, and has come back quite drowsy and feeling very sorry for himself as we expected. He's in his bed next to me at the moment and wearing his cone but constantly moaning/whimpering. I just called the vets to make sure this is a normal reaction and they said it is, the painkiller will wear off in the morning so to call them then if he's still making a lot of noise.

We've offered him water and a snack but he's not interested, I think he just needs to sleep it off. Any experiences anyone? Its been years since we had a dog castrated so I can't remember what the normal after experience is like!

Thanks

When Chloe was spayed, she spent all night whimpering if I left her side! And when she recently went under for her hip sugery she wimpered too. People told me at the time that they just feel awful - not pain so much, more just grossness! Similar to being under a general ourselves.

Wouldnt worry so long as the wound looks clean and stitches still intact, I wouldnt worry too much. xxxx

Cool thank you. The wound looks clean and stitched up nicely, it just looks painful! Poor thing, he's definitely entitled to feel a bit sorry for himself.

The anaesthetic alone has them making some wonderful noises when it's wearing off, it's pretty confusing for them to understand why they are feeling so groggy, dogs at work will make chewbacker noises when they have literally only been knocked out for an X ray:D, he will be a little sore but nothing the pain killers wont take the edge off, for bitches obs its more major but for dogs its really not bad at all, a little nick and a bit of tube knotting:D
Basically it is normal and some breeds play on it worse than others and the noises they make varey widely.
Just thank the lors u don't have a staff, or do you?:D

No its a terrier cross! He's fallen asleep now luckily. Being a man, he's probably just making it sound worse than it actually is. I'm reassured now that its all normal, thanks guys.

Sometimes I just love this forum! Also brought back my puppy from being neutered, quite a lot of whimpering, but he just looks very spaced out and confused. It just sounds like his sleepy whimpers so not too worried, but its very nice to hear what to expect. They had to send him back with the pinkest, most gay looking cone, just to add insult to injury!

Thanks for posting this, our new dog is being done tomorrow, so interesting to know what to expect. How long is a male dog in for, just the day? Also how long do they have to wear the cone for? Do they calm down fairly quickly afterwards, or do they still think they have bits for a while (ie, will he still bonk to cat and cushions!)? I haven't hada dog for over fifteen years, and can't remember!

We've had two terriers done in recent years; the first (now gone to the Big Kennels in the sky bless him) bounced in and bounced out like nothing had happened, the last we had done was our little Lakeland X last year who we expected to be fine - but he wasn't. He was very subdued and looked like he'd had a good whipping, poor little man. So you never can tell how any individual dog will react.

Hi Honey08- I dont know if it varies from vets to vets, but I took mine in for 8am, and picked him up at 3 oclock the same day. Generally, unless they have an emergency, they do routine stuff as soon as possible.
No idea how long the cone stays on, but I'm making mine wear it (when Im not around and at night) until the stiches are out.
I have to take him back in a week, so I'm hoping not too long. I have taken a couple of days worth of pain killers, just in case he looks very sore, but as he is also very lively, I'm inclined to wait and see as I dont want beggaring about and bursting stitches!
No idea about lingering bonkage, he's never shown cushion/cat lust!

Thanks very much for that info.

He's only been with us 24hrs - came from a rescue centre, so may have been over excited at getting out of the cage! He will have a go at anything. Has been calmer tonight after a enormous walk today! The cat is 20, and has only just moved in herself when the old man next door went into a home. She is not impressed with him at all!
