My dog has for the second time cut his 4 pads on his feet ( taken the top layer of skin off ) and he is sore. He had been to the yard playing with other dog and done it on the gravel. Does anyone know how i can stop this happening ?he loves playing at the yard but i cant have this every time.

Thank you.

Surgical spirt is really good for toughening up their pads, just wipe it on with cotton wool. Best to let the cuts heal first though otherwise it'll sting like hell!

Emu oil. Seriously!! We have huskies and do use boots on the more abrasive paths (we work them in harness) but a loose dog will most likely pull them off. I have read from some mushers in the states (doing really long distance runs on snow) that emu oil applied daily gradually thickens the skin and toughens it up. The best thing is that it can be applied even if there are cuts and totally safe if the dog licks it! Our one non husky (a collie) skinned his pad once and emu oil healed it in no time.
