Horrible, the poor sheep and farmer.

I wonder if more than 1 dog was involved? 27 is a large kill for 1 dog.

A 3 pack of dogs were loose by me and went on a sheep/chicken rampage through farms. It had happened before. Eventually i heard a farmer shot them. Owner was known for not containing them.
They once ended up at our farm - 2 rottweilers and 1 older looking poodle/sheep dog-type mix. The older one was covered in blood and very stand off-ish, unfriendly. The 2 rotties were clean and wagging tails, goofy friendly, approaching like pets, so i suspect ‘pack mentality’ brought the viciousness to the fore in the older one and the rotties were running together just for the fun of pack chase. Shame they were all destroyed.

A rhodesian ridgeback unsocialised, very unfriendly neighbours dog slaughtered about 12 of 25+ chickens and prized elderly cockerel i had as a kid. They left their tall garden gate open by mistake.

God, that’s awful.

Presumably the dog(s) would’ve eventually arrived home in a right state - I hope the owner(s) do the right thing and come forward, or that someone spotted which dog(s) did it.

Similar happened near Daventry earlier in December.
Unfortunately it doesn't entirely surprise me, given the attitude of some of the local dog owners towards training and control of their dogs (non existent), and how they view farmland (entitlement to walk and let their dogs run free wherever they want - including planted crops, fields with animals...).

We were once, many years ago, summoned with the knacker wagon to pick up about 25 sheep. Upon arrival there was also what we thought was a calf. It was in fact the remains of a collie. It was a young dog which belonged to the farmer, it had been 'holding up' the sheep and they had suffocated, none were mauled. The farmer was so angry he shot it.

Well that wasn't the dogs fault, it was just doing one of the most important jobs a working collie has and the farmer shouldn't allowed the dog free roam if I was not reliable

Quite. It was an example of how one dog can kill 27 sheep

We lost a ewe recently, had to be destroyed ( broken Jaw) following a dog attack...... Bull terrier puppy, belonging to the landlord. Daughter had taken him for a walk and not been told the sheep were in the field. Insurance paid, and one very upset LL daughter and wife.
