Amber (12 yr old italian spinone) is obsessed with eating snow. She'll lie by the back door for ages to be let out, and when I do, it's not for a wee, she goes straight away munching the snow. Even after she's just been out she'll be asking to go out again.

Plenty of water available to her, she's always drunk a lot. (She is on soloxin for a dicky thyroid, but this is under control now).

Any ideas why she's doing it? Can it be harmful?

agree with cave on this, dogs dont see much snow in this country and just take advantage of it... mine will go crazy in the snow and eat it lie in it, bury himself in it roll in it and basically anything he can do in it.. snow is better than tap water so no harm to your dog at all, just let him/her enjoy it....

i dont know from a dogs side of things but i love eating snow... yes i know. its a deep dark secret of mine, but its got to be done. and snow tastes interesting and crunchy.

i shouldnt worry about it, after all, its only water, think canine slush puppy.

lol, i cant say i have never been tempted...

though i did get my fiance (did i mention that again..ooops) to tie a rope around my legs and tow me behind his kubota for half an hour one good snowfall..

My pointer cross, gobbles down his food, asks to go out, eats the cold snow, comes in, and throws it all up on the floor!!

He also barks at pears (the fruit), tree stumps, and uses the unsuspecting persons feet as toilet paper!

The joys!

(plus atleast she isn't eating cat crp or chicken poo, another of the the vices he has)
