I have two dogs, one male (castrated last week) and one female. We got her about 3 weeks ago and we were told she was sterile. Well she is not! Sheis now in her second week of being on heat. Even though my dog has just been castrated he his still humping away, but for the last couple of days it has been a nightmare. They dont stop, he cries all the time and humps her, she goes looking for it. I just would like to know how many more days does this stage last? The first week was OK as she wasnt interested. After this heat she will also be paying a visit to the vet, but there is obviously nothing we can do but sit it out, just for how long? Even worse we have brought them on holiday with us to the in laws!!!!

Perhaps by sterile the meant she couldn't have pups rather than didn't come on heat. The average season last for around 21 days, generally they are at their most fertile between 10-12 days, but there are exceptions so you will need to watch her very carefully for the full 3 weeks, and a bit more. I am not 100% sure but I suspect your dog could still be producing sperm if he was only castrated last week, plus there is a possibility he could hurt himself so if it is at all possible I would keep them apart. You will ideally need to wait 2 to 3 months after her heat to have her spayed.
Hope its not too much of a nightmare for you, terrible timing eh!

MM is correct your dog is still able to pass semen for a few weeks after castration with what could be still stored, our vets always advise if there is an un neutered female in the household the dog must be kept apart whilst she is in season for 6 weeks to be sure.
So you may be a shock, but you can still get her spayed whislt she is in pup, if indeed she does get caught.

V. bad timing! I do hope he isnt producing sperm. Cant type much more than that as dont know what else to say other than OMG!!!
