Dog peeing in kennel

How on earth do I stop this? I've never known a dog pee in its sleeping quarters when it has the option to go outside?

I have recently rehomed 2 bichons, they are the parents of a pup I had last year who sadly died from a heart defect at 4months.
The 2 were always kept in a run when there was no-one in the house, so to keep them as used to their routine as possible, I'm doing the same, including overnight while the weather is warm(ish).
Every morning there is urine inside their kennel :( I'm constantly changing what's inside it to try to keep them dry because I hate the thought of them lying in wee.

the kennel is inside their run and they have easy access to the run, which they do pee in occasionally. All number 2s are done in the run or during walks or on grass etc.

I've had them since the end of April, am I doing something wrong or can anyone suggest what to try? Both are 99% housetrained and rarely have accidents in the house. I remember reading somewhere that dogs kept in dirty conditions as pups may do this...?

I'm not sure whether it's the bitch or the dog doing it inside the kennel, although the bitch is very clean (in season recently and wouldn't even have known).

Any advice appreciated.
 
First soft all disinfect the whole kennel but not with bleach.

And then you need to make sure they are fed on a morning not an evening and take them out last thing at night on the grass, this might help break the cycle.
 
I will disinfect and try taking them both for a final pee at bed time. Cayla ive put an old rubber mat covering the entire floor of the kennel and it tends to be on it the side which has no bedding on it, but occasionally their bedding is damp but not as if they've peed on it iyswim
 
If that is the case then, after scrubbing clean (they are still urinating) I would get a large plastic bed and try and make sure it covers the whole of the space on the floor with their bedding in that.
 
vet check in case incontinent... males can instead of emptying themselves on their last walk just do a bit of marking and then need a wee and will pee where ever they are marking and have scent. If the bitch has recently been in season she may have marked and the dog then pee'd over it. Only way to know is split them to see which is dirty.

Cayla is the bed idea sort of along the lines of crate training, ie don't give them an area to use as a toilet? I never even thought of that, didn't for a moment expect them to use the kennel to pee in when they have a big run to use.
 
ive had this with one of my young bitches and did as cayla advised...

we've had some success but it is a long slow process.

when you disinfect, use a strong solution of biological washing powder as normal disinfectant wont remove the odour.

I think with my girl its a combo of being unsettled and a dominance thing or anxiety over trying to assert her dominance. If you've recently rehomed these 2, could it be something similar?

Ive found catching her before she does it is key to breaking the cycle, which meant going to take her physically out ever 2 hours along with another bitch - cos i knew when the other bitch peed, so would she. Otherwise, she would go out and stand and look at me, or be so distracted by other things she wouldnt go ;) Unlike my other bitches, this wee girl makes a point of peeing and pooing exactly over where the others go, which is another reason to keep her kennel scrubbed with the bio solution as any hint of smell and she will mark over it again. Putting a bed or lots of bedding on the bench/sleeping area should discourage the peeing.... but my girl carried on peeing on the vetbed, yuck.

I had her urine tested and she also spent a day at the vets having other tests done before the vet agreed it was ok to remove her water bowl overnight. We did go through a period of her being in a crate, in the kennel, just overnight.

This was all working 90% of the time until i was in hosp for a week 6 weeks ago having my baby and my poor hubby was left manically fitting in, dogs, horses and visiting me and the baby , who was in ICU. Needless to say it all went a bit to pot but we are getting back to where we were now.

NSN, sounds like it could be similar to yours, what with being unsettled since they moved here. It's just so odd when she's so clean in the house, she scratches at the door to get out and would hold on for hours! That's why I can't figure out whether it's him or her, though he is perfectly happy peeing up against the sides of the run.

I don't know whether he would cope being separated from her, she wouldn't mind in the slightest though. I will do as you advised, starting with a thorough scrubbing while the weather is dry!

Check what you're your using to clean up with. Anything with ammonia in will cause the dog to keep wee'ing - he thinks another animal is marking HIS territory, so has to re-mark it himself.
