Does anyone keep their dogs outside in a dog pen in the day? (Summertime)

I ask because at the moment my Father who I live with and who works from home currently looks after my dog while I am at work in the day. At the moment she gets walked before I go to work and then again when I get home.
My Mum has a large Garden which could easily and safely hold a dog pen and I am wondering whether it would be nicer for her to be there in the day. I think my Dad is fed up with dog and I am trying to find a way of her not being with him all day. (more to it but don't need to go into that now!)

So question is, would it be an idea to buy/make a dog pen with a indoor and outdoor area for her to be in in the day time? She will be walked am and pm and would be on her own from 9-5 weekdays. Or is this something that is totally out of the question and a really bad idea?

Mine live out during the day all year round in pens and our dogs always have done. There are lots of companies who sell flat-packed easily assembled runs with roofing and kennel boxes.
Dog is safe, secure, can get fresh air and see what's going on around it. I would put it on a patio area or some type of hardstanding.

I am guessing hard standing so they don't dig out?

Thanks for this CC. You say yours always have done. I am guessing if I went ahead with this I should maybe leave her in there for short periods at a time at first to get her used to it? She is fine to be left on her own when she is crated so I guess it is just a giant crate really!

That, and the fact that grass etc will get churned up as well as the nice holes!!!

As you say prob best to introduce gradually if she is a bit older. You can give her a raw bone or frozen/stuffed Kong to keep her occupied through the day.

One of mine has spent most of his life outside during the day! I take the others to work with me but he hates it and would rather stay home.
I fenced off half of my garden and he comes and goes as he pleases (conservatory is open for shelter!) however he spends most of his time on the patio asleep.

The main problem I have with it is barking- as mine is outside he tends to bark at passers by which annoys the neighbors but hopefully yours will be better behaved!

This was one of my worries too. My mum has cats (which is why me and pup don't live with her all the time) BUT the cats are getting on so mainly stay indoors now so hopefully they wont wind her up too much! The only hardstanding mum has in the garden is opposite the catflap so may have to re-think where the pen goes!
