I have a very large Spanish rescue dog. He has been with me for 3 weeks. I am struggling to get nice firm poos. He is not runny - just semi formed. I know it's early days but would a probiotic help? He is currently on a low grade cheap dog kibble and half a tin of meat as he was fed cheap food in Spain. I would ultimately like him to go onto Raw. Should I bite the bullet and put him straight onto minced tripe or give him one meal raw and one meal kibble or get his poos firm first and then change?????? Advice welcome.

I am a RAW fan but personally would get him on a good quality kibble first off-Millies Wolfheart or similar. See how he gets on and then introduce RAW in addition later on. They can have mince and kibble in the same feed but I'd give him a chance on one before introducing the other.

I'd just bite the bullet and swap him onto RAW now. I dont think theres any point changing his diet, then changing it again. I'd start with chicken or turkey first making sure I got the mince/offal/bone ratio right. Then you can slowly introduce one new protein a week.

+1 :)

Crack on and get him on to raw

If he doesn't firm up pretty quick you might need to run some stool samples as he could have an infection or something but I would think the food will sort it pretty quick

Yep - this is what I would do too.

Good luck.

+4, I think! Go cold turkey, start with one protein, turkey is ideal! Introduce a different protein the week after and go slow on offal, it can cause my lot to produce sludge if I don't get the balance absolutely bang on.

not sure why you would put a dog with loose motions on minced tripe! I'd go with bland food first -personally not a raw fan but if you were going that way would go chicken/lamb first.

Tripe is very bland, bleached tripe was a well known convalescent diet for people . It might be worth checking for giardia , I have heard of a few dogs coming from abroad with it .

Turkey better, cheap mince from the supermarket, bland, good protein level. Tripe is good, chicken is not advised as a first protein due to the significant amount of dogs who demonstrate allergic reactions to it. Echo fecal sample for giardia if he doesn't firm up. Find a supplier if he's a big lad, it's worth getting an extra freezer.
