Dog poo to be DNA tested!

Am I missing something obvious here?!!!
Do they not need reference DNA in the first place!
They say they are going to need to take cheek swabs - that's all very well but no owner of a dog will be obliged to provide a sample for the register (and are unlikely to cooperate especially if they are the fouling culprits!)

Bwahaha...ridiculous waste of funds....cheaper to use a surveillance camera.
In Italy they have vigili borghese..plain clothes policemen who can fine you 80 euros,on the spot,if you don't pick up the poo...works well and is not too costly .

it was mentioned on the tv today, all dogs will be swabbed when they are microchipped..of course all these irresponsible dog owners will be getting their dogs microchipped!!! ha, ha.... those of us who are responsible will end up with our dogs being done but apparently they will be testing dog poo and will be able to eliminate the registered dogs and if it is in a park they are going to stop people coming in if their dogs are not registered.... it will probably work as well as the horse passport system!!!!

Bellasophia, last time I was in Italy there was dog poo every few hundred yards !

Also, what will be the politically correct description for a dog poo tester :biggrin3:

Bonkers, plus it's very, very difficult to get DNA from faeces. Cameras, even fake ones, would surely be more effective. And as mentioned, pointless unless the dog has been previously swabbed. People will just avoid the relevant park if swabbing is a prerequisite.

They should've come out with this on April Fools day........ you just couldn't make it up and it could ONLY happen in this stoopid country.

Suggested new job title for the geek that has to pick up and investigate the said "turd":- what about........

Canine Faeces Forensics Examiner???

or perhaps..... "Canine Anal Inspections Officer"???

Any others??

I think the further south you go the worse it gets. I am in n Italy and have been stopped more than once, probably because I walk two dogs, and have been asked to show I am carrying poo bags! if you don't carry at least 3 bags for each dog you will be fined. I always carry a roll of poly bags in my bum bag so I was good.We also can be fined for not carrying a muzzle as well at all times.Oh we also have to carry a copy of the dogs registration, microchip no etc...or guess what, they can fine you for that as well if you don't have it with you..
if you have an off lead dog in the city park and the vigili pass you get a fine for not having dog onlead and then they go through the above list...for some poor souls it can be an expensive day out .

Things may have moved on a bit but I was under the impression that DNA tests took a long time to perform - ie if you wanted to prove paternity. So with that many random dogs about I just don't see it happening.

As for the dog police checking to see if folk have poo bags and registrations, I think some of that in part is a great idea.

Our local footpath that a lot of dog walkers go on is disgusting, poo everywhere. BUT the footpath has a bin every 3 miles, realistically not a lot of people go for more than 3 miles, plus carrying a bag of poo for 3 miles isn't pleasant.
The council has now employed ''poo spotters'' a group of people come and walk the footpath carrying a can of bright spray paint, making a circle around each poo. Not entirely sure what the point is as the poo is still there. I'm also pretty sure that rather than employing poo spotters and putting up tinkerbell stickes on posts along the path (a sticker with tinkerbell the fairy on it saying ''there's no poo fairy, so clean up after your dog'') it'd be more useful to keep the money spent on that, and put up more bins.

So we'll now have Poo spotters
Poo sticker stickers
Poo DNA inspectors

Really?!
