What is with the over inflated prices at the moment? I sadly lost my dog in March and would now like another but prices are horrendous - even older out of the cute puppy phase dogs are in the thousands!!! I have to work so dont fit the critera for many rescues that like you to be home all day. Just a random rant - I would think with the current financial outlook and global recession prices would have normalised but no buyers remain confident they will achieve top prices.

So much more demand with a lot of people still working from home and not going abroad on holidays.
If you work full time, it's a hard call to get a puppy isn't it? I took mine to work with me, but couldn't have done it otherwise.

I am just amazed-still-at the elevated prices. I understand it costs a lot to rear a good litter and do all the health tests, but the litters I can see on Pets4homes etc are not health tested/amazing. I think byb are taking the proverbial. I’m happy to pay for a pup with a mostly red pedigree, but not a bog standard unregistered litter.

Out of curiosity I had a look on 'Sell My Livestock' in the working dog section and was stunned at how few were/had been available within 200 miles of me and those that were sold were for far higher prices than I have ever seen before even as puppies, not trained dogs. So glad I don't currently need one.

Same here - I have been looking for a while now. I just really can't justify paying £1,200 for a jack Russell - the last one I bought was £50! Plus, rescues round here are still not rehoming dogs so very slim pickings.

I’ve been looking for JRT too, the prices are insane! Our current one was £75/free (xmas present from FIL ?) and there’s no way I’d pay close to £1k for one.
OH and I have actually decided that the right dog will find us when the time is right and have stopped looking, partly because the prices are utterly mental and partly because it’s nearly impossible to tell who is a legit breeder and who is just a puppy farm front :(.

Yes it is mad. :( I would like to think of having another dog in the spring having recently lost our older dog. I would adore another Irish terrier but not only would I need to wait up to a year or more which would be fine actually but the prices in the last year or so have gone from about £1000 - near £2k. :( :( I did think something like a lakeland might be fun next time too and imagined they may be a bit cheaper but pretty much the same. Rescues don't love us because even though we have our own land and I work part time, we cannot fence to the required standard. :( Red IT will have to be an only dog for a bit longer but I wasn't really going to start looking till the spring anyway - hopefully prices will calm down a bit over winter. Dogs are now costing more (much more) than I paid for my well bred horse as a youngster just over a year ago...!!

I was offered an all singing all dancing black and white springer pup yesterday from someone on the Facebook page for £700. We were all talking about how silly prices are and someone said she has a pup available. So there is hope! Not that I want one right now, but at least some people aren’t taking the mick.

We were really lucky to get this girl, then rising 3, for £175 off Preloved 11 months ago, not long before Covid started.

Healthy, spayed, house trained, not been ill treated, lovely nature, good with people and other dogs. Vaccs had lapsed, but that was the only negative, and a very minor one.

Would love another similar.

If you can offer a great home I’d put a wanted ad out. I did this recently and had lots of reputable breeders and private homes contact me... lots of them are scared to advertise at a cheap price as there are stories of puppies being sold on. Most had litters at around a third less than those advertised.

In the end I found the perfect private breeder and forgot to ask the price. When I got there it was pre Covid price and the same price they paid for their bitch which was amazing. There are genuine people out there wanting genuine homes but most aren’t the ones advertising.

I can’t rescue as have the three big no’s: work full time (at a vets where the dog will come with me), have no garden (but have a several acre exercise pen and look onto pure fields and footpaths) and I have a cat. So finding the right breeder was so very important.

I did pay £900 in January but it was a registered KC JRT breeder. Saw mum dad siblings granny etc. Fully vaccinated and chipped, parents health checked for genetic eye and patella problems. I think I got a bargin. She was 16 weeks and she was held back so not to be sold as a christmas present. Breeder always takes back if there is a problem anytime in the life of the dog. She was not advertised, I contacted registered breeders and asked about litters due or planned. This litter was 3 girls and a boy. The boy was spoken for locally and the breeder was keeping the other two girls one to show and one to give to a family member. I travelled 2 hours to see her. They insisted on proof of identity and met our other dog before handing her over.

I could have got a JRT pup "unusual colour - lavender! :-0 ??? for the bargin price of 3K from gumtree. There were other pups on there for several hundreds of pounds on badly spelt adverts with pictures that looked awful. I think sometimes you get what you pay for. We have a girl bred for health and temprement and type. I hope she lives well into her teens so she will be a bargin at less than £100 year :).

There are some "lock down ready" French Bulldog pups on Gumtree priced accordingly??

A lot of rare bread puppies and also a Colliedoor.

I also spotted some very rare JRT pups. They looked bog standard to my untrained eye but must be special as priced at £2,800.

They must be related to the lavender ones I saw advertised in January!

I saw sprollies for a £1K somewhere. I’m sure they’re fabulous dogs, but they’re not a designer cross and that seems a crazy price.

Having lost our beautiful Dane in September, I'm not quite ready to open my heart to another but i have seen that Great Danes are 3k as opposed to the usual 1k
