Can anyone tell me why dog prices have gone through the roof and people are daft enough to pay?
Supply and demand. For a lot of people covid has provided the opportunity to be at home for a prolonged period of time so perfect time to get a dog.

For us, we jumped at the opportunity last December when OH had 2 weeks off and then I had the following 2 weeks off between jobs. Who knows when the next time we would have had 4 weeks off between us to settle in a new pup. So even then we would have paid whatever because we were in a bit of a race against time. I imagine that is the same concept now for a lot of people. Plus when everyone puts their prices up where else do you go? I'm all for rescuing but we wouldn't have been accepted as we both work full time, so for a lot of people the only option is to spend whatever the breeders are asking for! Not saying it's right, just saying it is what it is!

The problem is when Covid is over all those dogs who have had their owners at home will suddenly find they are alone for many hours. So unfair to the dogs. People who have never bred before are seeing this as a new way to make some easy cash! I knew it was Covid really but am totally amazed at the stupid prices people will pay. Many of these puppies will never get properly socialised and in due course end up in rescue once they show problems and their novelty value has disappeared.

I was horrified to see a post on FB yesterday asking for advice on how to care for a 4 week old Malinois pup, he was missing his mum and siblings. The new owner said the breeder had let the pups go early because the bitch had stopped feeding them.

I find it beyond upsetting to witness the ignorance and cruelty of some current dog owners.
