Following from the puggle thread... What qualities does your dog(s) have that make you love them even more?

I've been unwell for just over 8 months, in and out of hospital for just over 2 months, just had a PEG tube removed that I had in for 4 months, i am being treated for depression, progressed from a zimmer frame to crutches, and since developed tendonititis in both elbows. And I'm no longer a good luck charm for Marr Rugby Club as prior to this I'd never seen them lose. Let's just say 2011 hasn't been the year for me!

Anyway, I've found my dog invaluable. She has been at my side through it all. She always knows exactly what I need when I'm upset whether it be distracted by picking up her toy and encouraging me to play with her or just resting her head on my shoulder and letting me cry into the scruff of her neck. I could not be getting through it without her.

Any other wonder dogs out there?

nope- mine is an ungrateful swine! :p ha ha! in all seriousness- i get a lovely hello when i get home, but if she had the choice she'd go to "grannies" house and never come home, as my young cousins live there and she worships the ground they walk on!

your story is inspiring, and i hope you are back to full health soon. your dog sounds like a wee gem. ;)

xx

Poor you, you are really having it rough no wonder you got depressed and thanks goodness youve got your dog to cheer you up and lift your spirit. You having a sense of humour has also helped.

I wouldnt say any of my dogs have wonder qualities and at times Ive felt like sending them back to rescue(only kidding). Both my Dobes are very loving and are good house dogs although they do it in different ways. Darcy will bark to alert but Diesel will come find me and show me ie the window because someone is at the front door. Darcy is very intelligent and so athletic it takes my breath away sometimes at how easy she finds everything. Diesel my one brain cell Diesel is quite a sensitive guy but protective but even if they didnt have these qualities I would love them anyway they are just so beautiful and I never tire of looking at them.

First of all OP, sorry to hear about your run of bad luck and I hope you get back up to par soon. Onwards and upwards for you :).

Mine are wonder dogs because they kept me going through some bad health issues I've had over the last few years. My doctors credit me keeping walking them, however hard it was, with things not being worse for me. They gave me something that I had to do for them, a responsibility that couldn't wait no matter how ill or how much in pain I was, and that kept me going.

It's also the things they do that make me smile regardless of how I feel about other things in my life. Yesterday each of my dogs made me smile at least once. Two of mine were being complete thugs charging about everywhere during our walk in the local forest. Towards the end of the walk they were still a bit feisty and went running off to tree some poor unsuspecting animal. I could see them running through the bare trees and called them back with an "oi, don't go too far you dozy buggers" and one of them - my beagle Bella - looked back at me with a "oh, are YOU still here" look on her face. It was priceless. Then the beagle I have who had a horrible life before he got to me was just wagging his tail on the walk with a big grin on his face and that made me smile. It's so lovely to be able to give him the life he truly deserves. Finally, the mutt who's had the leg surgeries also was charging about yesterday and hurling himself everywhere and that alone made me smile - he's back to enjoying life again and I'm so proud of him for coming through everything to do so.

Gah, now I've gone all teary eyed :o.

Wow, you've been through the mill!

My older dog, patience and stoicism and effort, he is only four but he has been through such a lot, has been in tremendous pain and we had no idea, let me and a succession of vets and nurses poke and prod him without a grumble. He is no obedience dog and no tracking dog but he has tried his heart out for me and what he has helped me to learn has opened a lot of doors for me (and got me on a lot of committees, grrr :p).

The young dog, well, we had a bit of a row again today, I will get back to you. He is GREAT fun, I'll give him that :p

My pup is no good when I'm upset. If I'm sad he mopes around but if I cry he gets all frantic and bites my ear. He is a little prince though. We've been worried about him with other dogs as he was attacked in the park on the thursday but as usual he's surprised us and is 100% Top Dog. He is at his finest when all the family is at home and when I come back from college I get Mr Wiggle Bum The Snuffle Pup giving me puppy kisses and snuffling my ear. He's also fab at hide and seek in the dark.
So sorry to hear about your year. When things get better, you'll appreciate them all the more :) x
