Hi everyone,

I am currently considering a rescue dog and today went to visit the local RSPCA centre unfortunately they were all either very big dogs (german shepherds etc) or staffies/ x staffies. I do not want a very large dog or a staffy (nothing against the breed just not for me).

There were 3 dogs which I liked (all of which had been reserved and had never made it to the website) and 2 of which hadn't even been there long enough to be accessed.

Whilst the majority of the staff were also disinterested and didnt really help us, dont see how they encourage people to rehome dogs like that!! It also appears most of the type of dogs I am looking at get reserved straight away unfortunately. :(

Has anyone got any recommendations for any rescues in South Yorkshire/Derbyshire? Looking for a small/medium sized dog prefer a collie x or lab x but willing to look at everything would prefer a x (but will look at pure breeds to) and it must be female!!

Thanks everyone will have a look at them all :) sugar yes tried thornberry yesterday as they are not too far from us. They were v helpful but sadly nothing suitable but going to keep an eye out. :)

HI , IM A MEMBER OF THE ROTTWEILER WELFARE ASSOCIATION, AND WHILE A ROTTIE MAY NOT BE FOR YOU THEY HAVE MANY OTHER BREEDS AT THE KENNELS, THEYRE NOT FAR FROM SHEFFIELD AND ARE VERY HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY AND JUST WANT TO SEE THE DOGS AND CATS SAFELY AND HAPPILY REHOMED. RING JENNI ON 07719606454 SHES JUST DRIVING BACK FROM SHEFFIELD NOW!! IF YOU DO GO DO HAVE A LOOK AT THE ROTTS TOO, YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED, GOT MY LAST DOG THERE AND SHE IS JUST A GREAT BIG CUDDLE BEAR. GOOD LUCK

If you have a particular breed in mind any of the Kennel Clubs breeds have a rescue service. Most will match you to a dog but you must be honest about yourself and your situation - don't ask for a dog suitable for competition or working if you are only looking for a pet. They will for the majority send out a person to come and assess you and and your home, fences etc.

If you haven't had a dog for a while then go and do a meet and greet join at a local event. If its near autumn you could also attend the Discover Dogs event to take a good look at all the breeds on offer they will advise you on their rescue services.

Someone else has mentioned the oldies club they are fabulous! The dogs usually come from people who have lost their homes, passed away or have gone into hospital so can no longer keep their dogs rather than through poor behaviour. Sometimes they have health problems but nothing insurmountable. Its a nice way to own a dog and they have a huge amount of love to give.
