I know this is a very strange hour to be posting but my dog has a suspected sting/bite from something which she got yesterday morn. Face swelled up massive, very sore all over face/neck. Given steroid and painkiller. Rung the vet later in the day for advice as acting strange, whining/moaning/anxious. Told this is fairly normal side effect of drug. Drug effectiveness it says is 6-12 hours. Well that should have worn off now but dog still whining, not happy and I don't think she is right. Due to go back at 9:00am today but obv. that is still a little way off. She keeps looking at the hind foot and curling it up (which we noticed last night) and sort of kicking it in the air at times/licking it. (This could be normal as she normally licks her feet but the toe curling is a bit wierd). Looked inside her mouth and still as swollen as yesterday and she has patches of blood under the skin (I presume) but not purple or any other colour and this is worrying me slightly. On both sides but more on the swollen side. I just cannot sleep with her like this and worried we should take her now or do I stick it out till a more sensible hour and not pay an arm and a leg for the emergency service?! I am hoping someone may have experienced this before - we were told it was very unlikely to be an adder bite -the only thing is if we did take her back what they would acctually do. Heart rate/breathing seems fine and no vomiting, which we were told to look out for. Hoping someone may have experienced this and or there might be someone here to acctually reply! Looked all over the internet but can only find the usual advice - cold press/urgent vet attention - which we have already sought.

Thank you.

It's distressing to watch but most of the time it's a case of riding it out, as your dog isn't vomiting and the airway isn't restricted she sounds uncomfortable but not critical.
If you really do have cause for concern though or her condition changes then get her back before the 9am appointment asap if you haven't already done so, hope she's feeling better this morning?
Let us know how she is?
Oz :)

Hi,

Thanks for your response. Yes, it is really not great to sit through though I understand you just have to ride it out but its not like a person who can just tell you, yes their feeling a bit rough but they are fine if you know what I mean! She just seemed aimless like she didn't know what she wanted but I think that was the heavy painkiller. She quietened down once I went downstairs and sat with her/slept on the sofa with her on her bed and went to sleep for a few hours. She seemed to improve quite a bit in the last hour or so before we took her to the vet, perking up a bit. She hid under the chair when we took her to the vet after the experience yesterday as the painkiller stung and she is not good at vets at best of times! Vet didn't give any more drugs as she said swelling has gone down a bit and agreed she looks better/no more pain in the swelling. She did take a blood test though just to rule out the strange blood under the lip but she said as we thought that it could just be caused by the massive blowing up of the lip so quickly and vessels burst etc. Only strange thing is it is on the non-swelled side as well. Hopefully that is just normal. So after re-mortgaing the house to afford the vet fee everything is settling down and she just had some turkey for breakfast. Will ring with blood test result later. Thank you for asking how she is. :)
