Hi guys
I was just wondering whether you can shed any light on my lab's behaviour?
Before he lays down he always tries to find an item of my clothing or he drags his blanket and he lays down and 'sucks' it. He normally licks it and nibbles like he is grooming (and he sometimes tries to do it to me) very gentle.
Just wondered whether any of you have any experience of this?
Many thanks

He will be two next month.
He was sold as me as a 6 week old, but I suspect he may have been younger. He has double HD and breeders seemed more interested in money than dog welfare - not sure if this has anything to do with it?

It's generally seen in dogs that are wheaned to early from their mother, it provides comfort and can be theraputic much the same as suckling from the mother, I would not worry at all.
We had a lurcher that sucked on the quilt, he was removed from the mother at 4 weeks and also had distemper and parvo at a young age.
trauma/change may also induce this type of behaviour, but in general it jsut soothes and comforts, much like a child suckling a dummy or when u see them twisting a strand of hair when falling asleep.

thank you, I suspected it may have had something to do with weaning. I am just pleased he doesnt chew my clothes!! He used to drag them out of the washing machine, and I'ld have none left!

Our old girl (12yrs) has always done it, she wasn't weaned early and obv not taken away from her mum as such as we bred her. Like CALA said it's a comfort thing

Both my boy collies do it. They have special teddies they like to run and grab in the evening and settle down and suckle on! The only soft toys they have and they are only used for evening sucking time!
Odd but very cute

My little Patterjack sucks on her teddy too, she whimpers whilst doing it. She is almost 3 years old but weaned too early from her mother!!!!
I had never known a dog suckle before......glad she is not the only funny puppy!!!
