Do you have ID on your dogs, as per legal requirements?

Having caught a dog this afternoon, happily snuffling for sniffs in the woods across the track from the yard, I was bemused it had no collar, no ID at all.
Looped my spare pocket lead round it and then popped it in a stable for safety as I was heading back anyway.
25 mins later I heard someone calling in a singsong voice.... asked woman if she had lost anything. She announced that P****** was around somewhere.
Stuff said, she ended up exiting yard with dog on a piece of baler twine.

Apparently it's not nice to collar or harness a dog, nor hang labels on them 🤔🙄 no way would she entertain the practicalities nor the law. Neither was she a resident from up the track.

Ok, rambled on too much.... I have a tag on collar, though it currently is still the holiday one with my car registration number on one side and my number on the other.
 
Yes, as per law, however there was a time the tags had 'disappeared' off their collars, separate times, and we hadn't noticed !
Collars on all the time and microchipped, so (un)fortunately they will always be returned to us. ;)

Appalling behaviour from the woman, must admit I might have waited until she was panicking before 'finding it' in my stable.

Honestly, she was definitely lacking something! 😳
 
Mine only wears a collar when leaving the house - don't like the possibility of him getting caught up on anything otherwise. When we're away on hol I keep it on him all the time, just in case of escape etc., but he's generally supervised 24/7 then anyway.
(ETA - collar has tag on with surname, phone number, house number and postcode, and says "microchipped" on the other side. He wears this whether he's on usual lead, slip lead, harness or whatever, just to ensure the tag is on him when out and about or travelling, in case the worst happens)
 
Yes, the ‘I won’t collar or tag’ brigade reckon that’s grand as because as their dogs are microchipped that whichever poor sop (muggins here) rounds up their lost dogs and takes them to the vets they will be notified.

So no need to collar/tag them. People with nothing better to do will take their lost dogs to the vets for them.

Or you always know where they are? Mine are only out of sight when working and you’d not risk a collar in cover.

More satisfaction in handing to dog warden where possible, the ransome fine fee round here is now 3 figures, plus more if held overnight.
 
Mine wear collars 24/7 other than the spaniel when she is beating.
No dangly tags, spaniel has a leather collar with engraved brass plate, terrier has a soft collar with a slip on ID plate

Exactly this for my dog too. and a tag with my dad's number for when we're down south too incase someone too thick to dial a uk number were to pick her up.

That said, the whippet is walked in a harness if they are staying on lead and I don't put his collar on. I should probably attach a tag to his harness.

Also, the collie has her tag removed for agility and I do sometimes forget to put it back on. I need one of them engraved plates that slips on... I'll order one right now.
 
I understand not putting a collar on a working dog while it is working, in case it gets hooked up.

But sh1t happens and dogs get loose or lost for any number of reasons, no owner is 100% infallible, so when not working it is collar and tag back on - which happens to be the law 🤷‍♀️. Call me old fashioned, but I don’t care to pick and choose which laws to obey

Yes. Part of The Control of Dogs Order 1992 specifically relates to the fact that, when in a public space, pet dogs must wear a collar with their owner’s information. These details can be inscribed on the collar itself, or written on a plate or badge attached to your dog’s collar. Often, owners choose to use an ID tag that can be bought in pet stores or online.

There are some exemptions to the rule that dogs need to wear a collar with a dog tag. The exemptions apply to working or sporting dogs, those carrying out rescue work, and registered Guide Dogs.
 
Mine wear Identitags on their collars. I had had some catch their claws on hanging tags and these stop any risk of that. I used to take off collars in the house but then we had one who thought he was Houdini and sneaked out of the garden so now they have them on all the time except for baths.
 
Nothing in the house - I used to do collars 24/7 but have since known too many horror stories of dogs getting caught up. They're always supervised in the garden so aren't getting out naked.

Always collar with tag when away from home. I prefer flat tags (Indigo or Flexitags depending on collar type/size). Both dogs also wear an Apple AirTag.

Back in the day repeat offenders delivered to the practice (we're talking 3+ times escaped with no collar, fair chances given) were sent straight to the dog warden so it cost to get them back.
 
A few of us went camping, drank too much and I ended up with no dog in my tent in the morning. But he had a collar and tag so a quick check on my phone told me, via a text, that he had spent the night in a caravan about 50 feet away. One of my friends remarked that he had gone off in search of a better class of owner 😂.

I always keep a collar and tag on him, my front door opens straight onto the street.
 
Mine are also naked at home. Always a collar and tag when out.

Exception being when the spaniel is working (missing person search dog), his collar comes off, but I do have an ID tag on his search jacket. (Although it does seem a slightly redundant in that particular case given he’s wearing branding, out with a team of people trained in search and wearing high vis, wears very loud bells, and sometimes also a GPS collar)
 
Naked at home, but always her collar on when out. Name, adddress and phone number on it.

She still suffers from intermittent deafness when she sees a deer or something and a couple of times I have had to retrieve her from kind people who called the number on her collar.
 
I was told by groomer not to leave on collars or harnesses on Samoyed for long periods as pushes down the hair and can cause mats and heat spots 🙈 but off property they always have ID
 
Collars when we are out but not at home because the boy drags Honey round by her neck a lot of the time which she seems to like weirdly :rolleyes: I do sometimes forget to put her's on as she wears a harness as well but she doesn't stray far from my side.
 
For walks I have a fishtail collar to lead from and a separate tag collar behind so if she were to slip the lead she still has ID on. I will always take collars off her in the house/unsupervised though.
 
Harness with ID tag on when out and sometimes left on at home. Only use collars if dog is being supervised. Too many horror stories of dogs and collars, maybe an opportunity for quick release collars although they may ‘release’ inappropiately!
