Dog Theft

The views of any poster are only valid if they are based on fact/experience. It is no good my stating on here that grass is pink, when everyone knows that it is green. I would be posting simply to start an argument.
That wouldn’t be a long thread would it, what colour is grass ? Do you really just want everyone to completely agree with everyone else, we might as well just have an opening post and we could all come on and like it .....
A debate requires opposing views and if the objective is just to shut anyone up who disagrees prevent slightly then what’s the point ? This is all stupid really, of course dog theft is terrible, the only way I disagree with anyone else is that apart from a few popular breeds I don’t think it’s a big problem. I should be able to say that without all the personal comments but if I can’t i will simply read the threads in the dog section and leave you all to agree with each other.

Adult dogs have little to no value. Puppies of course are worth money, especially popular breeds

Evidence for this? Why do you think adult gun dogs are stolen (hint, because even a part trained one is worth a fair whack). If you’ve stolen something you don’t need to sell it for much to make a profit.

Also I am still waiting for which figures you are looking at which show people are scaremongering as you claim. I have provided you with plenty.
A debate doesn’t mean much of one side doesn’t have any facts to back up their statements.

I’ll presume they don’t exist then and you therefore should not be saying people are scaremongering because you have absolutely no evidence that they are and that the figures that have been quoted are incorrect.

It’s usual to discuss data not just opinions :p

Also I’ve not been trying to shut you up, I’ve been asking you direct questions in the hope of responses from you but you’ve just not answered

The stats provided earlier in the thread show to me that there is a problem.
The stolen posters I see on fb locally tend to be for working dogs which will definitely have a value. I don't agree that only puppies would be worth stealing.

When I was a child we would happily leave our Labradors outside the local shop whole we popped in. Would I do that now? No chance.

About a week ago I saw a staffy tied up outside Sainsburys and felt uneasy about it, I thought about waiting there until the owner came out but that would look weird and even arrogant on my part to act like I know whats better for that dog than its owner, plus how could I be 100% sure whoever came for it was its owner?

I used to see it a lot when I was younger but its quite rare nowadays, whether society has gone a bit backwards where you cannot trust those within your own community or whether its known that its just reckless and risky to leave a dog outside I don't know. Nobody would leave a young child alone in public, I get you can take the child into the shop but just trying to make a comparison.

When I was young, if you left the dog outside a shop, you could usually see it through the window, while you made your purchases. Now most shops are supermarket style. I do see dogs tied outside our local Co-op to a ring, specially there for the purpose but I wouldn't risk it.
My late mum used to tell the story of when she left me in the pram with the dog beside it outside a shop in her local village. When she came out of the shop, there was woman standing near the pram who said 'I was going to have a peep at your baby but your dog wouldn't let me'.
No-one would ever have accused my mother of being reckless by nature, things were different and everybody in the village knew everybody else.

Just the type of dog to be stolen by the scum who fight dogs, though I think they are not particular which breed they use as bait dogs.

It is tempting to leave a label attached to the collar of dogs left outside shops, like "I could have stolen your dog". Something to wake them up to the possibility.

I watched a video from a security camera which showed 2 women stealing a small dog tied up outside shops. It was broad daylight and quite busy. One kept watch and the other boldly went up and untied the dog and off they went. Chilling.

Without scaremongering or being personal...o_O...a friend of mine is looking for a trained gun dog and it is about £10,000 for a great one. Assuming therefore that an adequate one with no papers would still make you £1000, or even £500, that's worth nicking to a lot of people.
Cocker spaniels are very popular and if they have a uterus they can make a lot of money if you have the facilities to keep them.
Five were stolen over Chrismtas, a gamekeepers kennels were broken into.

A couple of months after my chap went missing, Bath Dogs Home was broken into after hours and 4 dogs were taken, a terrier and 3 lurchers. These dogs had all come from the pound. I believe 2 were recovered but I was told by a policeman that one had done a time trial and was on a boat to Ireland. They are on Doglost, nos 24362, 24363 and 24360. A year later another lurcher was taken from there, no 30616.

I think most freeads sites, if not all, no longer allow the advertising of 'free' dogs due to the high risk of their new loving forever home using them to train fighting dogs and I have read an article by a 'trainer' who said that he would send his wife, with a child in tow, masquerading as a good home, to pick up kittens, rabbits, cats and dogs.

I also find it astonishing on my local Facebook page that stray dogs are posted on there, with no apparent attempt to have notified the dog warden, scanned for a chip etc and yet seem to be handed over to the first person to claim it.

I Googled dog theft a couple of days ago and the statistics have gone up. According to my search, apparently people are now hiding in bushes (I presume in high volume dog walking areas) with treats to entice and steal our dogs.

There is a missing collie on fb I am following called Eddie. I honestly cannot imagine how his owners are feeling. We lost a cat once, and I honestly do think, if we’d found her body, or at least been notified by a vet that her body had been taken in (she was chipped), it would have made things easier.

You probably already know, TW. Eddie's body has been found by a fisherman. :(

I saw it, I actually cried last night. I am glad the family have closure, but how heartbreaking.

Yes, I totally agree with you.

I had a cat go missing years ago. Although he had free access he was never out for long so when he didn't come home I knew there was something wrong. I called and searched for him, I leafleted the area. Nothing. Not knowing was horrible.

Eventually I had a knock on the door. Someone further up the road was clearing leaves in their front garden and found his body. It is the only house in the road the same as mine. I believe he had been knocked over and was trying to get home. When he was found it didn't lessen the heartbreak of losing a loved one but relieved the anguish caused by not knowing.
