Dog to be put down for attacking a cat

Henry will chase cats if they run, but if they stand their ground he's nonplussed, and I can't imagine him knowing what to do if he did catch one, based on his reaction to nearly catching a chicken last weekend - he nearly had a heart attack then refused to go near the others! :D So not all dogs will react in the same way to cats.:)

ha!
isnt it funny the way if a cat holds its ground it stops the dog in its tracks the and they just sit there whining utterly confused as to what to do next!

i always think the cat deserves a medal for bravery though when i see facing up to a slavering mouth of sharp canine teeth :D but its definitely a strategy that seems to work!

Absolutely no way short of perhaps electric collar to stop mine chasing anything small and furry, cats included (and that wouldn't even be a lifetime guarantee, they're clever enough to work out if the collar isn't on or is a dummy, and one is hardassed enough to continue despite pain).

I don't wish harm on any cat so for this and myriad other reasons mine stay on a lead at all times and thus under close control when off my property. However, if they were out in the garden and a cat strayed in... I'd feel awful, certainly, but there is nothing I could do to prevent it.

Can't blame the dog. Same as if I had a rat and next door's falcon nipped in and grabbed him. Or if a bigger dog came onto my farm and fought with my dogs... its always the owners fault, without question.
We're meant to be higher up the food chain, it's not that hard if your dog is likely to chase small furries and you're in an area where you have small furries .. to keep it on a lead. Or at least that shouldn't be hard if you are blessed with brain cells.
Accidents happen of course, but seems like this wasn't an accident - more a negligence somewhere. In which case lets hope someone somewhere learns from this case.

Im sorry but maybe some dog owners just dont care enough about cats and make excuses about 'oh its natural, cats are prey, nothing i can do about it' etc simply because they cant really be arsed or arnt capable of putting the training in to stop their dog doing it.

aaaaaaah! that must be it then. must just be that i don't care about cats, and have no desire or ability to train my dog.

shame on me. :o

I think this case has more to do with public worry about out of control dogs of certain breeds attacking children than anything else. Yes, I do know the dog did absolutely nothing threatening to a child, but I bet you anything the judge thought "Suppose I let it go, it attacked a cat today it could attack a child tomorrow". And yes I know that the Staffie is not necessarily a person-dangerous breed, but would the judge know this or think it worth taking the risk? I imagine no.

agree with this.
i am a dog and a cat owner and it's more than possible to train dogs to leave cats alone or at least not bloody kill them

ofcourse, dogs have a prey instinct and mine will chase rabbits until the cows come home, but when she goes after a cat i shout a harsh 'LEAVE IT!' will make her come back to me because thats what ive trained her to do.

if you have a dog that will potentially chase catch and kill a cat its your duty as a responsible owner to do your utmost to train it not to.

Pleeeeease take my 3yo GSD x Rottie whose had 5 homes before me and tell her all that. I keep trying to tell her cats should be left alone and obviously the trainers we've worked with don't have a clue because she'll be good right until the point where that cats spins on its heels and runs and then the chase is on. Now of course I take steps to be responsible - my dog is always on a lead and never in the garden unattended, but the fence I built to keep her in 6ft6 with electric tape on top means nothing to her once a cat has sauntered through the garden and then taken off at high speed.
Luckily we've been lucky and she's never got one, but her life is perhaps not as exciting as it could be due to all these restriction I need to protect her.

I would seriously hope that the judge had done research on the matter as somone who thinks "it attacked a cat, a kid is obviously next" has absolutely no place siting in judgement on a case like this IMO

Hmm,well I have a bull terrier girlie ,Hetti, who has nailed two cats to my knowledge..not when here I must stress.Would I PTS her for it? Of course not! Now,if she bit me ,or another human with intent..that is totally different.
This girl is a very speedy hyped bullie, almost Mali like in her enthusiasm, she was a rescue, and was rehomed twice, but now I have adopted her. There just are not the homes out there for intelligent dogs it seems, most numpties want a sort of bovine breathing pillow.
In fact on her last return she was bloody from the last cat,but it is`nt the dog`s fault ..ever..in my opinion.

Nail hit firmly on head.

PS My own dogs have had roughly 10 cats. I have to admit I was more upset when one of them caught a red squirrel. Don't worry they're feral farm cats. In my area there's a few irresponsible cat owners that have un-neutered un-spayed cats popping of litters every 5mins. It's not possible for me to 'break' my dogs to cats, as they don't see them on a day to day basis.

Dear God, I hope for your dogs sake this took place on your own land and that for the cats sake it was a quick kill.

I find this quite sickening, your dogs have killed 'roughly' 10 cats??! Completely irrelevant that they are feral or someone's pet. Maybe try to get the cats spayed by a charity, there are plenty of them who will do that with a feral colony. Would you think differently if they killed someone's small dog or maybe a dozen or so?

You're right its not the dogs fault...its yours. Not an animal lover then?

Urgh

Mine would all chase and would not like to say what would happen if they caught one. We have a lot of cats in our road but none ever choose to come through my garden now. Next doors cat will sit on the shed roof and annoy them but step down? Never!

My dogs are not allowed to chase cats. They can all be trained, even my rescue Staffie who soon learned that I just do not tolerate it. Ever.

My sister on the other hand often allows her dogs to chase her cats, sometimes makes a half hearted effort to stop them, but most of the time claims "there's nothing she can do".
