Does anyone know of good reputable dog trainers in the Wolverhampton, West Midlands area? I had originally decided to go with "Bark Busters" but I'm a little concerned about their methods of training, they say their training is non-physical but they don't use treats or lures so I am concerned they maybe do more aggressive/forceful types of training which isn't what I'm looking for, I want my dog to be my best friend not to be scared of me.

I want to use a dog trainer because I have never had a dog before and have some concerns about our neighbours dogs who are more aggressive, so I am trying to give myself the best possible chance to have a happy healthy dog.

Try Claire Martin at Chrysalis K9 - I'm not sure she is still offering regular training classes due to new commitments but she may still do 1-to-1s or be able to refer you on to someone on the save wavelength. I have complete trust in her understanding of dog behaviour and she is CAPBT and IMDT accredited. She's Tamworth way, I think some of the training venues would be within 1hr of you.

Otherwise Dogs Trust Dog School at Roden, their training hall set-up is the best I've seen and the course definitely tailored towards new dog owners. Only 5 mins off the end of the M54 so not a bad trek from Wolves. :)

Build a short list of recommended trainers and then go and sit in on at least one lesson - preferably more - to check that they are the sort of people you want. Time consuming yes, but it's even more time consuming to try and 'undo' some inappropriate training at a later date.

That is a good way I will go, I've got 3 now, including Claire Martin mentioned above. I do not mind the time-consuming part its better really and a dog will be time-consuming anyway. I know I will make mistakes but the smaller and less frequent they are the better

If Bark Busters is anything like in the USA stay away from them. Definitely visit and make sure you are comfortable with the way the trainer instructs and trains.

I assume they are because I found out its an international franchise, they probably all have the same principles. I have decided to stay away from them, I don't know how they train without using treats and lures and I fear its an overly dominant form of training, everywhere I read states that training should be fun and a bonding experience, how they accomplish that without things like treats seems questionable. Thankfully I have found this out now rather than when it might be too late like someone mentioned above

Just wanted to say (and I know several people have already commented on this) that I am very impressed about how thorough and careful you are being Sukhpreet Aujla, in researching so much before you have your dog. I wish more folk did the same.
Thank you but I don't know why people would not do research, the more I do the better and the amount of advice that is available here is unbelievable. I know that no amount of research will ever truly get me ready, and I cannot research how my specific puppy will react to the dogs next door but it would be ridiculous to just get a puppy and then try to work it out afterwards

A bit random, but if you are happy to do online training, look up Drayton Michaels on fb. Yes he is new York based, but this means nothing.he will do video and phone sessions and if you only follow his fb page you will still learn a ton more for free. He is pain free, force free positive quadrant and is utterly amazing.hus daily video blogs are very informative and while you suss a trainer out over here, you can learn from him online too. He is a behaviourist and has a lovely enthusiastic way that is contagious and with great results..good luck!

Not a personal recommendation as I don’t live in your area so have never used this trainer but try Catherine Hallam

You can find out more about the IMDT and it’s trainers here

Thanks for this, I was advised to look at the APDT website for positive type trainers but the local ones for me all live in Birmingham so they might not want to travel to Wolverhampton

http://www.apdt.co.uk/dog-owners/local-dog-trainers - there is one in Halesowen or if you are on the north side of Wolverhampton we have some in Market Drayton. Most will want you to travel to them, especially if it is a socialisation issue, to be in a group. But many will be happy to travel up to 20 miles I would think.
You could also look on the APBC list of behaviour councillors, if local ones don't do training as well they will probably know someone they can recommend
