My JRT pup Boo is now 7 months old and is still terribly travel sick. We have tried her in her travel crate and in the boot but is still sick. We take her out in the car at least once a week thinking she will get used to it but she doesn't. We have tried not feeding her first but she still throws up frothhy water and bile.

She goes in the car fine, tail wagging and all happy but she literally turns green and throws up. We only travel her about 10-15 mins but last week took her 25 mins away and her little white face had a green tinge to it - you had to see it to believe it.

I travel her with our other dog but it makes no difference.

Now we want to take the girls away to scotland over the summer. Is there anything my vet can give me to make her feel better?

Thanks

Try ginger tablets from somewhere like Holland and Barratts?

Also, try getting her into the car and just sitting on the drive with the engine running initially, just for a little while, then build the trips up gradually.

If it helps, she will almost certainly grow out of it eventually, although I know that's not much comfort now:o

Thanks - will try the sitting in the car with the engine on.

I have never had a dog that is travel sick before. She is so funny though as when we take her to the car she can't wait to get in, so its obviously not putting her off! Silly Boo.

Quite a few of the puppies in the class I help with get sick - bless 'em! At least she is still keen to get in the car!

I think glucose in water can also help? I'm not sure what the vet could offer, might be worth asking for the long journey - they might even give you a mild sedative for her so she sleeps through the journey.

I had a rescue puppy that would throw her insides out everytime she travelled even 1/4 mile. She was an anxious little thing, despite travelling with our other dog who she adored.
We started by literally driving down the drive and stopping, praise and a game of ball.
Built it up to 1/2 mile and out onto canal path for a walk.
1mile= nature reserve walk.
She associated the car with something nice happening and looked forwards to the trips. The sickness stopped and a few months later we went to visit relatives 160 miles away. She was fine.
The cat was sick that trip though.

i had a young dog who was travel sick from the start, i did all the things suggested, sitting in the car, then sitting in the car with the engine running, then very short journey(a few minutes)get out and walk in the forest and then home again, nothing worked for me. i then had to go from london to blackpool and the dog had to come with me, so i spoke to the vet and he gave me some sedative tablets for the journey. she was dozy not asleep and was a little sick during thejourney. we obviously made lots of stops for wee breaks and stretch of legs.... the good news is that she was fine from then on and i didnt have to use any more or the sedatives. i think the sedative just calmed her so she didnt get in a panic when the car moved. good luck with your journey....

My old Border collie only had to travel half a mile and she was throwing up! She travelled several times a day in the car and it took her about a year before she stopped and could travel anywhere.

Thanks for the replies - l'm hoping she will grow out of it then - like I say, she doesn't seem anxious at all and is quite happy to get in the car, it seems to be the motion that makes her sick.

Will try the vet for our long journey and see if we can give her anything to ease the sickness. Will try ginger for short journeys in the meantime.

Thanks again

Boris used to get terribly travel sick and we tried all of the usual remedies- ginger, not feeding him, tablets from the vet, etc.

the thing that helped him most was taken him on short car journeys (around 15 minutes) to somewhere really fun which for him was the local woods.

We also found that he travelled best in the 4x4 instead of our other cars and 7 years on he still travels better in the 4x4 and gets a runny nose and looks a bit green if we travel in other cars.
