Dog walkers. A long, justifiable, rant!

Really? Ok. I won't do that then! I'm just a bit concerned for when Nitty comes back really. I think she would actually have killed the dog and I'd feel awful if that happens (she doesn't like dogs much). Maybe I'll just hack on the roads. Car drivers seem to be more reliable than dog walkers! lol

Not an overreaction in a location where the dog walkers are actually trespassing, and should not be there at all IMO.

I posted the other day about a loose dog charging and barking at me on daughters pony....embarrasingly I fell off:o I was OK, but the attitude of the dog walker was disgusting- didn't call the dog, didn't get hold of it, didn't ask how I was....when I asked if she thought what had happened was acceptable, and what if it had been a child.....I got a mouthful ( several actually) of foul abuse. So I reported her and the police went and had a word with her.....if she had apologised, or in any way been concerned, then I wouldn't have.....

Just to add.....we have dogs. Big dogs. They run arund the yard with the horses so the horses are fine with dogs in general.....

ah sorry I misunderstood! well if he didn't have permission to be on the land then he should keep his dog on the lead.
sorry If I came across abrupt, when im walking my dogs and there is a horse rider, they never stop and just keep coming straight towards us and never give me a chance to get my dogs on a lead!! and they are the first to have ago when my dog spooks their horse...

Sorry but f you cannot control your dog in a public place (including someones private land) the thing ought to be on a lead.
I have 3 with perfect recall, manners etc, but one with none of the above.....guess which one stays on the lead ;)
Jess I carry a schooling whip now after my horse being attacked by a rottie a couple of summers back.
I will issue ONE warning only to the owner, before I give it a flick to discourage it.

hope you're ok poppymoo! That's so rude. The chap with Ben the dog yesterday was a nice guy. I'd be much crosser if he wasn't. I actually felt really quite bad for him as he was obviously embarrassed.

I was just thinking about carrying a stick but I'm not sure I could bring myself to use it on someone else's dog. I'm a bit of a softy really :o Although I suppose compared to being kicked it isn't that bad...

ETS: can you shoot dogs with a water pistol like you do fighting cats? That could be quite good fun! :)

There seems to be more and more problems with dogs , I heard story's quite often now.
The worse thing about is that so many of the owners are aggressive and unpleasant .
We were 'worried' once when I was on a three yo on its first trip out in a lorry to be ridden we stopped ( mistake with hindsight we should have keep moving ) and the three yo became distressed the owner wAs worse than useless my OH was carrying his hunting whip so as the situation was escalating and I thought I might be in real bother he gave the dog one with the hunting whip.
That sorted the dog with the horses but it still was running round the owner barking and running away we left them too it.
This owner was not in any way unpleasant in this incident and in fact shouted to my OH that it was ok flick the whip at it when he shoute he was going to do so.
But I have heard some awful tales from our local beach .

I'm always amazed by the number of dogs that are allowed off the lead despite having terrible recall! I meet a lot of brilliant dog owners when out riding and am always happy to let them use my horse as a bit of a test-dummy; i.e. with dogs that aren't used to horses I'm happy to stand her still while the dog owner walks their dog past a few times. She is great with dogs so even hysterical barking doesn't really bother her (though being chased, having dogs nipping at her heels understandably does!). But I come across so many dog owners who have their dogs off the lead on bridleways (busy ones, where you meet a LOT of horses!), despite the fact that the dog can't be controlled around horses. I just don't understand it!
Another thing that really annoys me is when dog walkers use footpaths that go through private fields, and proceed to use the entire field as a personal playground for their dog! Yesterday, I was walking across a footpath through one of the fields on the livery yard where I keep my horse (which incidentally has signs saying "please keep dogs on leads" on all the stiles), only to see a woman with a dog over at the other end of the field letting the dog run all over the place with no lead on! I'm afraid I'm a bit of a wimp so I didn't go and say anything, though I probably should have, especially given the fact that the dog proceeded to follow me into another field, completely ignoring it's owner! It didn't go back to her until it had leaped all over me, scratching me with it's extremely sharp claws!

To be fair, the day before I went out and there was a chap with two collies. One was on a lead and one off but when he called the one off the lead it went straight back to him and he put that on a lead too. Then he stopped and waited for me to pass. I said thank you a lot :) They aren't all bad.

It is naughty though as they let their dogs run all over the crop. I guess they just don't know how to behave and assume that farm land is all fair game.

Yeah I'm fine thanks....sore butt, but mostly shame at toppling off small pony:o:D

My main concern was that theres loads of children ride around those lanes and bridlepaths and the woman wasn't concerned in the slightest about what had happened....I was worried it would happen again, and the next peron may be injured....

Was plopping myself about ringing the rozzers, never done it before but they were lovely actually:)

Problem is if I come off due to someone's dog and they have a bad attitude, while I am off the horse I am likely to kick the owner and the dog in a temper, once because of a dog I went straight over my ponys head, the lady was very apologetic and asked if I was ok, I just said no worries, jumped back on and cantered off :) if she had been ignorant and tried to blame me it would have been a different story.

I hate dog walkers like that, its so dangerous. A lot of horses wouldn't have stayed as calm as your ned. I've had a loose dog lunge at a horse I was leading at an event, the horse reacted by trampoling the dog... The dog yelped like mad and ran off, it was ok. But I think it was a tad surprised that when it lunged at my horse, my horse lunged back (and over...)! Not horsey, but I have also RAN OVER a dog on a motorbike during a motorbike lesson! A huge retriever bounded right across the road in front of me but it was too late, I had nowhere to go so went straight over it and luckily the bike stayed up. The dog rolled down the road behind me, but amazingly got up and ran off! My instructor was livid and stormed off to try and find the owner but couldn't. So dangerous! Shame for the dogs though, its the owners who are fully to blame.

I have had too many incidents in the last 3 months to type up on here but I am pig sick of dog owners letting their dogs hassle my horse or friends horses on a hack, same fields usually, and when I finally, politely confronted the owner after the 3rd incident, I got shouted at and I believe (cant prove it until I hear further) some nasty backlash to the owners of the land.

We recently had signs put up telling the horse riders in no uncertain terms to consider the dogs whilst on a ride, but noone considers us.

Rant over too!
