I need some help and advice..

Lately i've changed my dog walking route due to the losing light in the evenings and have taken to walking my 6month old puppy round a field nearer my house.

The past 3 days we always meet this other lady who has 3 dogs (1 on lead, 2 off lead). One of the ones off lead always starts barking at my puppy and runs at her snarling which results in my puppy shooting off crying. My puppy is still on the lead so doesnt get far.

What bothers me is this women can't call her dog off and has to grab its collar and pull it back and never apologies for her dog or even acknowledges I'm standing there.

I suggested yesterday she puts her dog on the lead if she can't recall it which turned into a bit of an arguement and ended in me threatening to remove her dog with my boot if it does it again. My last dog was attacked as a pup and it really knocked her, my puppy is the friendliest dog going and I would hate this to change. Yesterday as soon as my puppy saw this dog she hesitated behind me.

What would you do? The stubborn side of me wants to keep walking the field as I want to as this is the only route I can take through fields but the sensible side doesn't want my puppy to get hurt. Some people I have spoken to told me to call the dog warden, has anyone got any experience?

I would slap her/report her (to the dog warden as CC suggests) and walk my puppy no where near her:p
Actually I would not personally avoid her I would just make sure the next time I walked my puppy was armed with security like my rotti at one side and akita at the other;):D but if I where you I would avoid the constant negative meetings for your puppy

If you can avoid her then do so, for the sake of your puppy and her socialising, she needs all the positive experiences she can get at this age. As you say, she is already hiding (not great)

Thanks all for your advice... air spray, didnt think of that! might be better then my boot..

I was really angry last night! it is really upsetting seeing my little puppy scared as her tail never normally stops wagging :( this woman is a brut, tonight my mum is walking with us so she can see if she knows the lady

This woman should keep her dog on a lead if that's how it is with other dogs. I bet though it's worse when on a lead and that's probably why she doesn't put it on but, if that's the case she should make sure she can get it under control and improve its recall.
My dog is worse on the lead than off as she's very reactive on lead with other dogs due to being nervous herself. However, if I see someone coming towards mewith their dog on a lead i will get her back on the lead - even though then it actually makes her look 10 times worse when we pass them as she has to put on her 'show' of hackles up and barking!

Mine wasn't brilliant at recall to be honest to start and sometimes she would do a bit of a charge at the other dog (only certain dogs though) and bark at it which of course is not nice for the other dog walker even if I know she's not actually going to do anything of course they don't! However, the more fuss I made or if I showed that I was tense then that would make it worse. She doesn't do this any more as she has built up her confidence so, where possible i do prefer her to be off the lead.

Can you walk yours off the lead or not or will it actually run away? I know this is not your problem as such but dogs are often better when off the lead than on and yours could actually get away then if it wanted.

Otherwise then yes I would get an airspray thing - this may actually make the owner more aware of what a liability her dog is.

Hi ladyt25, thanks for your comments! It is interesting hearing experience from another point of view.

Perhaps her dog is worse on the lead then off but to be honest I dont really care, if she cant call her dog off mine she should have it on the lead.

My puppy is a 5 1/2 month old working cocker spaniel with a nose for trouble so until I am 110% I can recall her in every situation I'm not having her off the lead!!
