We have a nine year old beagle bitch who we rescued at 6 weeks of age from the hunt kennels as she was going to be shot as she was too short at the shoulder to run with the pack. She is in good health (apart from being a bit on the porky side) but every time we put her Masta dog 'rug' on to go outside for a walk she walks diagonally sidewards for the first few feet. She never does this without the rug on and she does it whatever rug we put on her. Has anyone else out there got a dog that does this? It is absolutely hilarious to watch and we can't figure out why she does it. Incidently she only ever goes from left to right (the rug fastens under her belly on the near side) and she never falls over although ocassionally she will run gently into things (sidewards). Why does she do this?

probably the same as when you put travel boots on a horse they do the ministry of funny walks... She might be slightly more sensitive on one side but if she walks into it so to speak and then shows no discomfort, I wouldn't worry. Does she really need rugging? Is she thinned skinned? Try and brush her on either side and see if she reacts to brushing more on one side than another.

Oh bless - I hope she gets used to it soon, although it must be really funny to watch!

When my Dobbie first started wearing a rug, she refused to do a wee when she was wearing it, but thankfully she has now realised it is ok!

I bought my staffie (in siggy) a weatherbeta dog rug as he's always shivering, won't go outside if it's cold, raining, windy, etc, thought he'd love it.

Put it on him and he just froze, wouldn't move a muscle, tail between his legs. Kept trying it on him for the shortest time to see if he'd get used to it but he hated it, ended up selling it on ebay. Maybe if we'd done it from a puppy he would have accepted it.

So at least you are getting some steps - whichever direction they are in

Yes no problem. She lives at an equestrian centre, my partner is one of the groundmen and lives on site. When he goes to lock up the buildings at night the wind whips round the building and it is very cold. Candy now lives in a mobile home in the middle of a field, which is very cold in this weather and when the weather is like it is now she feels the cold quite easily. She is only a very small beagle hence her not making the grade with the rest of the pack. Because she is a little older now she doesn't generate the heat she used to when a pup so we like to make sure she is warm. Bless her.

My JRT has two fleece coats which she is fine in, and also a weatherbeeta waterproof one. In it she potters around like a little old lady (she is only 1yo), and walks like her feet hurt. Thankfully we don't have to use it v often, as I guess she is telling us she isn't that keen on it.
Could you buy your beale a lighter weight or a fleece coat and see if she likes that any more than her present one.
