Quick sense check please - report yes/no?
Rural location, house with wrap around garden (not fenced) that is surrounded by farmland.
Public footpath runs right by the perimeter of the house garden.
House has owned Dog 1 for years. Dog 1 is a black GSD type. I've had a number of encounters with it over the years whereby it rushes out onto the footpath.
Initially it was a little intimidating but the dog always stopped a few feet away, never acts aggressively, and if the owners actually notice it recalls well.
So I've let it be.
House has recently acquired Dog 2. Dog 2 is a large, young black male. At a guess I'd say either Rottie or a Mastiff crossed with a lab.
I had a reasonably scary encounter with it a couple of weeks ago whereby both dogs rushed at me (my 2 on leads), Dog 1 a little more intent than he would be on his own, but quickly backed off.
Dog 2 was completely out of control, intimidating BUT ultimately was just boisterous and there wasn't any sign of aggression.
My 2 dogs shit scared, Mannie just wanted to scarper, but the spanners response in that sort of situation is to snap - so to prevent her doing that (and potentially causing Dog 2 to retaliate) I put myself between Dog 2 and mine and just kept circling while Dog 2 literally jumped all over my back. Owner pathetically trying to get dog very unsuccessfully. A couple of times I stuck out my leg in a semi kick to try and keep the dog off me. I eventually caught the dog, handed it back to the owner, and exchanged a few cross words.
Essentially my position was dog out of control on public footpath. His position was the agricultural land is his garden and dog perfectly entitled to roam free.
I told him I expected the dog to be fenced in and if it happened again I'd report it.
Well it happened again tonight.
Dog 2, less boisterous this time and was wearing some form of remotely controlled collar.
Maybe I would have let it go given the dog was noticeably less frantic, but the owner (whilst we were exchanging some sharp words) blurted he was a rescue and had previously bitten someone.
So they may have just scored an own goal.
Is this something a dog warden has any say in? There is no reason to think it's a problem dog, provided it's adequately fenced in!
