I've posted in the dog section but there's more "traffic" in here. :)

My staffie cross Bobby has suddenly started needing to urinate frequently, just over the last couple of hours. He keeps asking to go out, coming back in then asking to go out again. :( Twice I've not been quick enough to open the door and there's been a little puddle on the floor. :(

I've now settled for leaving the back door open, so the house is very cold but it's better than accidents.

If he's still like this tomorrow, I'll take him to the vet. Meanwhile, has anyone any ideas about how I can help him? He's his usual happy self in every other way. Eating normally, drinking plenty of water. He had his evening walk but did wee a lot while we were out.

When our cat had a similar infection and I rang vet just as he was going out for the evening, he suggested that I could give her some Metacam and the left-over anti-bs that we always struggled to give the (other) asthmatic cat. A bit unconventional, maybe, but he knew us well. Of ocurse we took her to surgery the next day. If you have neither of those available, could you get to a late-night chemist for otc cystitis treatment, to keep him more comfy overnight?

Hmm. I might have some of my own cystitis treatment around. :o

He seems to be drinking lots of water, which although it will add to the weeing, I think is probably a good thing?

Hmm, I have noticed he's been drinking more water lately generally. I wonder should I try to get a urine sample? Easier said than done... :o

Good idea, but they do instant blood tests. My PRT was diagnosed last year, but has responded well to insulin jabs,

Book him but before you go take a sample of pee in a small sterile bowl and cover with some cling film, they will test it and no doubt give you some medication, it's not uncommon but they will see if it clears up with thd medication, if not they will then want to do further tests for more serious conditions, some dogs get them if they don't drink enough, they may also tell you to give him half a cut min c tablet to help clear if up too.

Thank you.

Top tip, use an old plastic Chinese takeaway tub for the sample

Probably a UTI as mentioned. I may sound cruel but I would restrict (not withhold, before all the usual suspects jump on this!!!) water overnight.

and do not restrict his water. this is not cruel but actually potentially going to damage his kidneys as this could be kidney or bladder infection or kidney trouble. no water=less blood flow to kidneys=potential long term kidney damage. the trick in these situations is to ring your vet just for advice-they won't mind if you do it early evening!

Is he drinking more than normal? There are lots of conditions causing polydipsia and polyuria. If drinking normally then suspect a UTI. I would definately get him checked tomorrow armed with a urine sample. I would certainly not be restricting water intake. X

Yes he's been drinking more for the last couple of weeks. I didn't restrict water, and I did manage to get a sample. I also took his temp last night and it was normal. He cried in his bed a little last night. :(

How did it go at the vets?

The vet found his temperature higher this morning, blood and protein in his wee and yes he has an infection. He gave an antibiotics and anti-inflammatory injections, plus tablets to take at home.

Sugar levels were normal and all was clear when he examined him. The vet's a bit concerned about him drinking more water lately, but says it could be this infection's been building up for a while. When the infection's gone I've to monitor his water intake (measured amounts) and if there's cause for concern further tests will be done.

Bobby seems pretty much back to normal tonight. :)

Thanks for your concern folks. :)
