A friend has just acquired a rescue border collie. He is 2 ish and has been badly treated, drops to the floor if any sudden movement towards him, but is a lovely loving dog normally. Only problem at the minute is that he keeps weeing in the house!! She has watched him closely and never seems to catch him doing it!! He has access to the garden all day and wees fine outside. She also has two other dogs but she has had these for years with no trouble. He doesn't wee at all over night, just settles down and goes to sleep!! She has tried all of the common sense things but is now at a loss. He is gradually getting better but does anyone have any suggestions, thanks

If we give our BC access to garden all day then shut door she will then wee within minutes in house. We found we need to keep the door to garden shut so that she gets into habit of asking to go out, if she has access all day she seems to forget to go when she is out there. It is similar with the yard, I always let her out in the garden when we get home as she forgets to wee at yard before getting in car.

How long has she had him for? I only ask as I recently acquired another rescue and he's about 18months. He would go in the garden when let out with the others but initially he would also wee in the house and I mean obviously like walk into living room and pee on the rug instead of asking to go out.
When he did it I never said anything (well not much anyway and careful not to raise voice) and would just take him to back door by leading by collar.

I know this probably isn't much help but he just stopped doing it. Probably took him 2 months total to settle in and get into the routine of the house and I think once he'd started to relax the issue resolved itself.

Thanks for both of your replies.

Baileybones she has only had him 3 weeks or so. He came over from Ireland and was castrated just before he came over in April I think so it could even be he is still marking his territory? He is a beautiful dog with a few issues which my friend will sort its just this weeing thing!!!

Ah fingers crossed everything settles down with him.I remember Alfie had only been here a couple of weeks and he ran into the living room and proceeded to pee on the sofa! I threatened to turn him into a rug a good few times I swear!

I think I'd be inclined to make sure his routine is steady and consistent and fingers crossed this will right itself. I thought my boy was confident when he came but now he's settled I realise some of that was actually nervous energy. Good luck to them both x

You could try going back to basics, taking him outside every other hour or so and really praising him when he does anything.

Mine is also a border collie from Ireland. He was perfect at first and then at about 3 months went through a destructive phase and got stress poops once with wee also. This lead to repeat marking when we weren't around which was very frustrating as it was only in the living room on the carpet, never when we were there. There was poo occasionally but not so much. I tried enzymatic cleaners and adding citronella as this is supposed to repel them from marking but it didn't work. I didn't have to leave him for very long and sometimes he would do it when my partner went out in the morning and I was still getting ready.

I decided to shut him out of the living room as it has a separate door, suddenly everything was normal again! He stopped counter surfing and grabbing things in the kitchen, I put his bed and all of his stuff under the stairs, he didn't wee again. I remember thinking it was a bit mean at the time but honestly I was being soft and he is happy having the hallway, stairs and landing, plus kitchen (and he doesn't touch anything in the kitchen even if you leave something out).

I am fairly sure that the reason this has worked is that he is now very noise sensitive and paces, whines and gets stressed when he can hear dogs barking, people walking past and stuff outside (the living room is at the back of the house where the most sounds can be heard, including a really infuriating ice cream van). This is VERY common with collies and it has only started to become apparent in the past couple of months, so keep your eye out for that. He is scared of the TV, the oven fan, extractor fan, microwave, anything that makes a whirring sort of noise, obviously the hoover or lawnmower etc too.

So for us it was either breaking the cycle of marking and narrowing down his bed area to prevent him toileting near his bed (this can be hard with rescue dogs as they will usually have had to go in their kennel), and/or reducing his anxiety by reducing the noises and activity he could hear.

Also I am fairly sure this sort of thing happened in the first ten mins or so when someone went out (even just one of us!) so treat balls, kongs and treats etc helped lots. I don't always give him one now as he's quite happy and has a collection of things to play with (plastic bottles he loves).

Anyway just thought I'd share our experience, hope he settles down soon! Our dog is truly the best dog I have ever known! I am happy that he is more settled :-)
