Hi all, as some of you may know I rehomed Max from a rescue a couple of months ago. All is going great, been off lead on walks, can be trusted free in the semi-secure garden and he sleeps downstairs with no whining (although if he does whine I do let him out - thats the only reason he does it now)

But he just won't stop messing in the house! Most days he is fine, and won't poo - we had a bad week last week after he ate an entire box of sugary breakfast cereal, and had the runs for a week - he is such a thief! He is left for 5-6 hours max in the day, and most days is fine to do this, doesn't mess - he never poos or wees at night at all anymore.

He does have some SA issues, and he has a DAP plug (which I need to replace this week) but some days he seems to get worse. Yesterday evening he was walked at 4.30 for nearly an hour, then fed. Me and the OH then went out for two hours on our bikes - something we have done before, and when we came back he had done a huge wee, and was stressy panting. His bed was all over the place and it took him a good half hour to calm down.

When I left him this morning with his kong, he seemed his reasonable calm self again, any thoughts and anything I can do - or is just more time needed?

I need to go buy new carpets, mine smell like a dog toilet :o
 
No real advice but why not take him out with you on the bikes? It can be easily trained and would be better exercise for him than an hours' walk...or do I remember you saying he had mild HD?


TBH I would leave him in a crate with a Kong or a bone or something, rather than feed him out of a bowl and let him see the rest of the pack go out without him, it's a more secure enclosed area and he will be less likely to soil it.
 
My neighbour takes him out for a walk at lunchtim tues/weds and if she's in the garden he's out with her as long as she's out. On his longest days left alone it's 5-6 hours, it's less than 3-4 when my neighbour is home.

Can't take him with on the bikes, we're training for a triathlon and did 40km last night, not something a dog with (apparently) severe hip dysplasia is suited too. I take him running with me if I'm going for 3 miles or less, the wee breaks give me a rest too lol.

He's left in his secure area when we're not her and at night, I wouldn't want to leave him in a crate for longer than an hour or so really. Some days when I've stalked my way back in so he doesn't hear me, he's fast asleep passed out. I bought some wash and get off spray today so I'm hoping that might discourage him as well as saving my carpets a bit.
 
I wouldn't call two hours a long time in a crate if he has something to occupy himself with? My dog overnights in his crate and so do a lot of adult dogs I know and none of them have died yet :p but each to their own x
 
Could he have been disturned (door knocking) hearing things outside? I take it you still leave the radio on and make minimal fuss of leaving?
Does he drink alot? faeces is usually the main suspect for SA and urine less so.
I would maybe get a urine sample checked at vets. It could be he was stressed as he was desperate to go to the toilet or indeed because you left but seems odd sometimes he is fine and other times not so.
I would go with urine sample, radio on high and a sign on the door (DO NOT KNOCK ON DOOR NIGHT SHIFT WORKER) obs you may not be but better than saying no one home or the likes of;)
 
I find that if I'm walking the dogs before I go out, I have to leave sufficient time when I get in for them to have a big drink and then a big wee - usually about an hour. If I don't they're either desperate when I get home, or we do have the odd accident. Maybe that's why yours is peeing?
 
He does drink alot - so maybe a urine sample would be a good plan. I had thought it was just because when he's stressed he starts panting and makes himself need water, but perhaps there is more to it than that - thanks. I've never had a dog this big before so I just assumed that drinking that much (and making that much mess when drinking!) was part and parcel of it.

It could have been someone at the door, but we don't tend to get anyone knocking really, as we're a bit out of the way, and friends usually know that if the cars aren't there we're not in - although obviously we were out on the bikes, so perhaps someone had been round and made him crazy.

I don't leave the radio on for him during the day, and as I say he has been better with this, although still weeing sometimes - less poo. I will have to be more diligent about not fussing him again, and not talk etc. I have to leave a clothes drier in front of the kitchen door now as he can open those, and last night when we went out (swimming this time!) he'd broken in to the kitchen and helped himself to everything there - thankfully not much, but left a huge poo and wee again. I think he just sin't used to be left in the evening, although we have done this before and he was not this bad.

I did try this morning to make him have a wee before I left, but he was having none of it. I'd walked him, got ready for work and had breakfast then let him out again.
