I've just adopted a 20 month old greyhound (she didn't make it to the track as she wouldn't chase). She's very sweet, but seems to hate going for walks! Every other dog I have owned or known go mental when you pick up their lead, but Fernie slinks away or at best, lays on her bed looking most disinterested. When we do get out she lags behind & I constantly have to cajole her to walk alongside me. I can't let her off the lead yet as she has zero recall.

Has anyone had a similar experience & have suggestions on how I can summon up some interest in her.

Hi my name is Tillie,

have you tried taking out treats to encourage him/her. Any ideas on how i can stop my Border Terrier from running away once let off the lead and stop him from attaking other dogs!

my dogs hide if its cold weather!
but then they are keen when its nice! so probably useless comment!? but one isnt very good on lead, hates the pressure of you pulling and goes into mental breakdown when a car goes past, shes just a nervous type, when she was a puppy she spent first few weeks throwing herself on the floor and basically having tantrums about the fact she had to wear a collar! much better with time, treats defo worth a go, and make it fun lots of fuss, walking should be fun time. good luck

Is she maybe cold? As I know greyhounds tend to feel the cold. Does her collar fit ok? Not rubbing or annoying her? Where do you tend to walk her? As if near buys roads with lots of cars/lorries going past she may be scared?

Try taking treats and tempt her with them, lots of praise when she steps forward etc

To further what Gina said, I would make putting her collar and lead on a positive experience, too (lots of treats and praise) as she may not be used to wearing one much.

Def would make sure she is really warm with woolly coat on this time of year. Would also just take her out for a play and then back and build it up from there, lots of treats.

looks like shes taken the greyhound = 40mph couch potato to the extreme bless her.....

Hi Mrsbloggett,

When I adopted my first greyhound, he was extremely nervous around people, particularily men. If I walked him anywhere near lots of other people he would try to drag me home. I found the best way to deal with this is to walk him somewhere really quiet, take plenty of blocks of cheese and maybe get a friend with a nice dog to walk with you so it encourages your dog to act a bit more doglike. Greyhounds have a very regimented life even when they are puppies so they just need some encouragement to act like normal pet dogs. Give it a few months and when you pick up her collar she will be all over you like a rash

Alternatively, get yourself another, more confident greyhound to be her companion
