Right my 13 yr old Patterdale has always had a dodgy gut, he is allergic to salmon, white potato, beef and dairy and has spikes disease so cant have gluten. Finding a food that suits him is an absolute nightmare!

I had him on raw for quite a few years, very happily, until he go continuous diarrhoea I was in and out to the vets for nearly 4 months, lots of steroids and probiotic paste etc etc, he went from 8 g to 4.5 and ended up in on a drip at which point they eventually did a stool sample - mainly because i was screaming at them - and found he had salmonella. Now whether this was the raw food or a body he had eaten down the field who knows.

Got him settled down again and hes been fine for yonks until about a month ago when he started again with the runs. He had been on James Well Beloved Gluten free but was quite faddy about eating it, i then realised i had white potato in it so hunted around and found millies wolf heart and tried one of theirs, he ate it for about three days before refusing it point blank. Vets did steroid injections and paste again still not better. I saw the vet I know rather well and said look hes lost a kg again already hes 13 can we please do anti bioics whilst we wait for the stool sample you're going to send off to come back as he cant afford to lose much more. Vet agreed, weve done a week of Baytril and hes still loose, they rang this morning to say hes got campylobactor but that is present in most dogs anyway and Baytril should sort it if it is that give him th full course and see.

In the mean time I bought some natures menu cubes of raw asI couldnt get him to eat anything else. He has been happily eating that for a week and now today is looking decidedly less keen on it.....

I dont know what else I can do - hes bright and alert beetling around down the field etc but doing penguin poos and v faddy abouteating.....

any ideas?!

i feel your pain. my old lurcher used to suffer every so often and i assumed it was something she had eaten as she was partial to any rotting rabbit etc while we were out walking. i ended up using a muzzle when she was off lead to try and stop it but she still got the runs...i then worked out that the attacks coincided with traumatic events (for her) either a storm, fireworks, shooting, so maybe your dog is anxious about something which is making him worse, sorry, cant think of anything else. i did have a supply of tablets from the vet which i could use the minute she started the squits and they helped. she ended up with arthritis in her hips and she also had the squits then so i think it can be pain related....hope this helps...
