My old (13) pointer has pretty crappy teeth and gums, and he has spells of really bad bleeding, his remaining teeth are kept on top of by the vet, but he is currently bleeding a fair bit. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to stop it, or help it heal?
The vets just seem to prescribe antibiotics which he gets for his cough anyway, but they don't help the bleedng? It from the bottom canine area if that helps?

I've never had a dog with bleeding gums I must admit, and mine are greyhounds with appalling teeth. In fact the oldest (7 next month) has had another lot extracted recently and now has 10 teeth left!

Maybe bathe with salt water or something? I would give the vets a ring too and ask their advice :)

Hiya, yes I will be off to the vets in the morning, I just wondered if there was something to stop my kitchen looking like the chainsaw massacre set! He doesn't seem to concerned but when he coughs it sets it off again :-(
I know he's getting old but I hate all of the signs :-(

LOL about the chainsaw massacre - I had that recently - the evening after Islay had her teeth done, she bit her own tongue when she was panting (still numb from the op I assume) and there was blood everywhere! It seemed to dry up by itself though? Sorry I cant be any help :(

Well he bled for about 4 hours last night, kitchen looked like Sweeney Todd's this morning.
Took him straight to the vets at 8.30, he has had a haemogram, and has some antibiotics, as his lymph nodes are fairly inflammed, the vet didn't seem to think it was his teeth or gums, so we are just waiting for the blood results which will be tonight/tomorrow.
She thinks it may be something :-( further back in his throat, but will see what the result are first.
This is the bit I hate about pets getting old :-(

The vets have just just with the bloods, everything within normal range, red blood cells on the low side but that's to be expected with the blood loss.
So he has 5 days of antibiotics, to see if the lymph glands go down and then possibly a biopsy of the nodes?
He is back to normal now, but I am terrified of him bleeding like last night it was everywhere (believe me I have seen suicide scenes with less blood, that is no joke!).
Cheers for the support guys, I know all my dogs are special, but he REALLY is the best dog ever.

Only me again! Well yesterday was horrid, he had 3 big bleeds, each one taking 10-15 minutes to stop and I reckon losing about 1/4 pint of blood total, by 11pm I was verging on hysterical (not at all my thing!) which made me even worse. Finally got him to stop washing and he went to sleep so I went to bed, got up this morning, no additional blood (didn't clean up last night because I didn't want to disturb him), but I got into the vets at 8.30am, took more blood before the courier arrived for the laboratory, sent them off for clotting profile, did an inhouse analysis, liver is fine, kidneys fine, red and white cells fine, tiny amount of blood in urine but that could be stress related, the only abnomality was low protein level.
So we are waiting for the profile results and keeping our fingers crossed. He has had a small bleed earlier but it stopped quickly. BTW the blood is coming from a tiny hole in the gum.
Thanks for reading

Sounds horrifying, don't blame you for being upset. Fingers crossed it has settled down now, and the profile results will give your vet something to work on.

Basic question and one I am sure your vet has already answered (or should have done) - is there a root abcess anywhere?

Hi Harkback, further development is we took him back and he has been admitted for overnight obs, and he is being xrayed and investigated in the morning. The clotting profile was normal too. Aaaargh!
The vet was saying that he was looking for something like an abcess in his gum.
Fingers crossed please guys

Further update, he stayed in on Friday night and had no bleeding (which is good, but typical). The vet tested his bleed time and it was too long to do any investigation, but he is going to take some more blood to test for Von Willebrands a rare Haemaphilia. I am not sure what the prognosis is from that but in the meantime he is staying in this weekend for some R&R.
Will update you on Monday as and when.
I am not such a hysterical wreck now
