Hi, my dog isn't feeling well and could do with some quick advice....

He's a 2 year old collie and the last 24 hours has been quiter than normal, this mornings poop on his walk was fine but at lunch he had the runs three times on his walk. OH gets in before me and let him in the garden where he ran out and did a very farty loose poop. He doesn't normally go in the garden so he must have been desperate.
His walk tonight almost every 5 mins he tried pooping with either nothing coming out or a dribble of poop.
He's drinking normally and when with his friends plays as normal but in the house he's more sleepy than usual and has gone stright to sleep instead of trying to play.

As far as I'm aware he hasn't eaten anything unusual (doesn't eat human food) just his usual food and biscuits. But he does have a habit of drinking from the water butt when OH waters the garden. I've told him to stop letting him do that just in case.

Could it be worms? He was last wormed end of January.

I'm going to starve him for 24hrs and then try a bit of tea (dry food) to see if that helps...does that sound like a plan?

Should I phone the vet for advice? Am I over worrying?

His nose is wet!!

Hi,

Poor poopy dog! I'd starve him for 24 hours then give him some boiled plain rice and chicken the next day and then same again mixed with dry food and then back to his normal diet.

If he's drinking that's good, he will be less likely to get dehydrated.

Hope he feels better soon :)

I'd keep an eye on him for next 24 hours. If he's being sick or retching it could be a sign something is stuck, a bone or something and then I'd definately take him to the vets. If he's drinking fine and keeping it down and keeps chicken and rice down he'll most probably be fine.

Chicken and rice normally does the trick, just keep an eye out for vomiting and not drinking. Then I'd advise vets as the dog will become dehydrated quickly.

Let me know how you get on x

He's not had food now for 14hrs, no sick but still more sleepy than usual, not playing ball with me but happy to play with his mates and chase the trains!!
Not drinking his water from his bowl but drinking the puddles on his walks!!
He went and hid doing his poop this morning so I couldn't see if it was runny but he had a dirty bum so I can only assume it was.
Do I try him on the chicken an rice tonight or starve for a bit longer? I feel awful for not giving him anything.
I might give the vet a call later.

If he's not drinking properly I'd call the vet.

Don't feel bad about starving him, it won't do him any harm but if he's not drinking properly and got the poops he'll be getting dehydrated.

If he was drinking properly I'd still say chicken and rice tonight and see how his poos are tomorrow.

Thanks...lunchtime walkies nothing but I think that's because he's empty?

I called the vet and they said the same as you regarding the chicken and rice so I'll try tonight...or she said scrambled egg???

He does seem more perky as he came in and went straight to his toys :)

Thanks for your support, you've really helped.

No problem at all. I know what a worry they can be!

Scrambled egg can be a little rich so i would stick with boiled chicken and rice. Just boil it so its cooked and cut the chicken into little bits so he doesnt bolt it too quickly.

Hope he is feeling better soon :)

He was hungry last night which was a good sign as the other night he wasn't bothered about food at all.
I made him rice and chicken but he turned his nose up so I tried rice and scrambled egg but didn't even sniff it so I gave him a handful of his normal dry food (Science Plan) and he ate it...I'm not sure what that says about my cooking skills if the dog doesn't even want it!!!
He had x2 shape biscuits at bedtime.
OH took him out for his first walk this morning and he hasn't pooped so I think thats a good sign that at least it hasn't gone straight through him?
I'm taking him out in a bit for his second walkie so I'll keep an eye on him...although I must look a bit odd going through the trees looking for poop?!!?
